Give Us Your Huddled Masses, unless..

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these — the homeless, tempest-tossed — to me;
I lift my lamp beside the Golden Door.

This is inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, at a time where the world was looking for a place to go that exemplified freedom, the statue offered the above and more.
In today's world when immigration is one of the top issues that will help decide the next president, I would like to
know what do you feel should be done with the masses coming in from Mexico, the Middle East, and Asia?
As of 2007 America's population is 300 million, with 1.1 legal and illegal immigrants expected to enter America yearly, the Census Bureau estimates a population of 420 million by 2050 if the immigration and population increase stays the same.

The Pros and Cons handout should help give you some background on the issue, but living in Arizona we are especially sensitive to both the pros an cons of immigration. You are the next generation to have the power, what will you do?

OUR U.S. CULTURE IS BUILT ON THAT OF MANY COUNTRIES. WHAT MAKES THE U.S. SO GREAT IS THE DIVERSITY, WHICH IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH IMMIGRATION. THIS IS THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY, AND WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SHARE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES WITH MEXICAN, ASIAN, OR EVEN MIDDLE EASTERN IMMIGRANTS. THE FACT THAT THEY WANT TO COME HERE PROVES JUST HOW MUCH BETTER THAN THOSE OTHER COUNTRIES WE ARE. I KNOW I'M NOT AFRAID OF LOSING A JOB TO A MORE TALENTED IMMIGRANT, THEY DON'T POSE A BIG THREAT TO ME. IF WE'RE ALL DOING GOOD AT OUR JOBS, THEN NO ONE HAS A REASON TO FEEL THAT IMMIGRANTS ARE A THREAT TO THEM. IF NO ONE WAS ALLOWED TO COME INTO THE U.S., THEN THERE WOULD BE NO AMERICA, BECAUSE WE ALL COME FROM IMMIGRANTS. IMMIGRATION IS A PART OF THE U.S., WITHOUT IT THE U.S. WOULDN'T BE THE WAY IT IS.

I agree that diversity in the U.S. is one of the greatest things about our country and that without immigration we would not be the same at all. but I also think that our government has the right idea about how to deal with immigrants. which is that anybody can come to this country as long as they earn a citizenship and don't sneak in illegally. the reason is becuase if we just let anybody enter the country whenever they wanted to not only could our population become to big to handle but we would not be able to keep out dangerous poeple like terrorists. I think that the border should guarded completly and that if someone wants to become a U.S. citizen they can do it the legal way

Im all for immigration. If you want to leave your country to be in a better country (why they pick ours is beyond me)then go for it!!! If you are going to,take the time do do it LEGALLY!!!!!!!!
I hate the fact that people are here and they dont have to pay taxes like the rest of us yet our taxes go to pay for them. Im 16, I have a job and i have to pay taxes. If some illegal immigrant cant handle that responsibility, maybe they're the reason their country sucks.
I just really dotn think it is fair to the rest of us.

Jessica_Two said...

In response to gary's comment: I agree that we probably wouldnt be much of a country with out immigration, but that arguement is old to me. With the outrageous number of immigrants its not improving our country anymore. Its costing more money. We have all the ingredients in our little melting pot we dont need a plethora of a certain one.

lmcaslan said...

Immigration isn't a bad thing at all. I believe that it's almost a necessary thing for the US to have. We all started off as immigrants so there should be no reason as to why other people can't come here. The US has a lot to offer and it's understandable that people want to come here for the opportunities. I do strongly believe that any immigrants that cross our borders need to become legal citizens. It isn't right of them to come here and just expect a free ride sort of deal. They need to abide by the laws we have. If they do then I have no problem with them.

I agree with everyone who talked about the United States and it's diversity. That is one of the great things about this country. I believe we should welcome those who wish to live here, but those people should take the time to become citizens of our country if they truly want to reside here.

Without a doubt, America is known for and built upon its freedoms which also includes immigration. But as for everything, there is a limit. Yes when those incribed words were written on the pedestal of the statue of liberty, it was a desperate time for tired, poor, and homeless people. As is this time today with the immense amount of immigration from the Middle East, Asia, and Mexico especially into Arizona. Immigration is all for the better when you think you are moving to a different land of oppurtunity and freedom. But the only thing is that TOO many people are immigrating illegaly. if people decide to make the move to more oppurtune contry, then they should rightfully do it legally. The U.S. government can only handle so much illegal immigrants from other countries as far as healthcare and taxation goes. It is simply unfair and unjust to the rest of the citizens and legal residents that pay the taxes that they're given and yet illegal immigrants can get the same things without those taxes.

cgerber said...

Jessica i completely agree with your comment on the fact that immigration is for the good of those who want to move. i too pay taxes for my job and so do all the other legal residents. I agree that the way that it should be done is legally by the same means necessary. But also, if poor families can't pay their taxes and their country has a weak economic system, then why should their families be the blame for a poor country?

cgerber said...

in response to natalie's comment, i do agree with the fact that the way to go is to take the time to legally become a citizen. If the government keeps letting these illegal immigrants slide without taxation, then the future will be an ugly road. Our country could soon turn into the countries that illegal immigrants so long desired to get away from because of this economic failure produced by illegal immirgrants.

Jessica_Two said...

Colin i agree with what you said about our country not being much better than theres was to begin with. I think that we need to put some serious conditions on the immigration deal. We need to set some hardcore rules for the ones that are here and dont let anyone else in without going through the required procedures. If we keep accepting the flood of illegals our country will not be very good at all

gnalbandian said...

THE ONLY REASON THAT WE ARE LOSING MONEY FROM ALLOWING IMMIGRANTS IN IS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE ENORMOUS WAVE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS THAT COME HERE. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THEY COST MORE MONEY THAN THEY EARN US. BUT ALLOWING LEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN HAS ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON OUR ECONOMY. I BELIEVE THAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS WRONG BUT LEGAL IMMIGRANTS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SUFFER FOR IT.

lmcaslan said...

I agree with what Gary said. I think that the legal immigrants are getting looked down on and disrespected just because of the illegal ones. It's not their fault that people enter our country illegally but they shouldn't be put at blame for it. Legal immigrants are fine. They're not doing any harm. They took the time to follow our laws and that's the only way i think immigration is okay.

dpluma said...

I strongly believe that this next election will be based a lot on their views on immigration. I think that everyone should be able to live a better life and if that means moving to America then thats alright. Its just like how are great ancestors moved here from Britain many years ago to get a better life.

dpluma said...

But then again that is not always best for our country and that is when the debating starts. With all of the immigrants coming over to America it increases the crime, we lose money on taxes, and many more. I think that they should have to do it the legal way and get citizenship first. Then what they do after that is none of our business.

kargo said...

It's been said that America is a great melting pot, and I agree. Our country has been founded and molded by the hands of a multitude of ethnically diverse people. With that in mind, I think that immigration is great! The only problem is that those who dont go through our legal processes aren't really qualified to be here. How many places do you go nowadays where the convenient store speaker doesn't speak English? Or maybe you've noticed the signs up in Spanish or Vietnemese? If you want to come to this amazing country to become an American and live a wonderful life of freedom, great. But DO NOT come here unless you are willing to speak OUR language and abide by OUR rules and have all the same priveleges and responsibilities as we do, LEGALLY.

carloslagos said...

I have read most of your guy's comments and you biggest concerns are that illegal immigrants dont pay taxes and that they should be taking the "time" to come here legally.

First of all, anybody who earns a paycheck pays taxes that INCLUDES undocumented immigrants. Your getting this idea from people who get paid, i guess you can say, freelance, such as people who may be doin you yard every once in a while but that is only a fraction of what undocumented immigrants do. So undocumented immigrants do pay taxes.
So dont worry that your all your money is going to illegal immigrants. Thay have to pay taxes too.

carloslagos said...

People are saying that people should enter legally not illegally.

Think about it. Doyou think people come here illegally just so they can be here illegally?? NO! thats a stupid assumption.
"They dont go through the legal process because of the time it takes to get into this country. People have to wait for 20 years (to gain residency status),” he said. “Those people are waiting and life goes on. If you had to wait for a year, it wouldn’t be such a bad thing.”

This is one of many people's similar accounts. The process is long and costly and... long. People do have to wait as long as 20 years after you have finished all of your paper work. All you'd do is wait.

Imagine waiting 20 years to be accepted into a college. By that time you would be old and screwed over.

So you can't just say "they should come here legally man." Seriously, who in there right minds would want to come here illegally if they could come here legally really easy like many of you think?!

carloslagos said...

Another concern is that illegal immigrants raise the crime. Thats pretty much true. BUT you have to consider why?
Many people think just because someone is labeled as illegal then that means they're criminals.
I don't think it matters where your from or what ethnic background your from but for some reason people come to that conclusion.
I think most crimals come from poverty, social repression, and feeling like you dont belong. When you look at high crimes in African American ghettos, trailer parks, or any urban slum one doesn't assume that they're illegal immigrants. So you can't say that all crime or even most of the crime is caused be illegal immigrants. If lving conditions were better they wouldnt have a reason to do crime. Nobody would, not even illegal immigrants (gasp)!
It's like somebody coming to the conclusion that everyone named "George" is a selfish, war-hungry, instigator.

carloslagos said...

Though there are many false reasons to despise illegal immigrants, there are some legitimate reasons as well. Illegal immigrants are usually brought in with the aid of Coyote. A lot of these coyotes are agressive, violent, and will stop at very little to get their money. The same goes with smugglers and basically any type of colt or gang.
But the solution would not be to punish the peaceful, hardworking people, who do the work you wouldnt even do, but needs to be done (at minimum wage). I think the wal being built is a great idea because it would make it moer difficult for the bad people to get in and it would slow the rapid population growth to a maintainable number so everybody can be accounted for and taken care of of.
The most important thing that the government needs to do it to pave a road for immigrants already here to become legal, and to stop the drugs that come into this country. Why because these drugs bring down the society and makes the poor even more poor, and al qaueda has threatened to lace these drugs with chemicals that would change the users minds into an unpredictable state.

mgauntt said...

I have really mixed feelings on this subject. On the one hand, illegal immigrants are an incredible strain on the United States economy. Supporting those that don't legally pay taxes is a huge loss for the country. Not to mention the high crime rate that they produce, which costs even more money. Many illegal immigrant women have their children in the U.S. so that the entire family are now legal citizens. These loopholes and this thoughtless lawbreaking makes me feel as though it is not acceptable in the least. However, illegal immigration does bring the country many good things such as a devoted and strong workforce willing to do the dirty work that most Americans won't. Many illegal immigrants are good, hardworking, industrious people who are here to make a life for themselves, and I think its in the very Constitution to give them these rights. But I think the negatives in the end outweigh the positives, making my decision for harsher punishment and stricter border patrols.

mgauntt said...

In response to Colins comment, I completely agree. The movie American History X has changed my perception of the immigration issues in both directions. But possible my favorite line in the movie is "The Statue of Liberty says 'Give me your tired, your hungry, your poor...' but its Americans who are tired and hungry and poor." I'm all for giving immigrants rights, but I think we need to make it a really difficult process to enter the U.S., legally or illegally. That way, we know that those who do enter through way of the law truly want to be here for the right reasons and are willing to follow the rules and do their duty to society. America is becoming incredibly populated, and I think that to remain a world power, we need to be selective on who has the right to live in the greatest country in the world.

mgauntt said...

In response to Gary's comment, I strongly strongly disagree. They do pose a big threat. With the money we spend annually supporting those who enter our country legally, we could use it to improve the necessities of our country. Furthermore, it gives those who hire illegal immigrants an incredibly unfair advantage in the workplace. Although an illegal may not directly replace you, if the company you are employed to goes under because it's competitor has more money to improve their facility or lower prices, this ineffective and soft policy will have possibly permanently affected your life.

Jessica_Two said...

Matt, American History X is an amazing movie (i remember i used it as an example in contemporary issues) That line also makes so much sense to me! We need to help Americans before helping others!!!

Also, I dont really care that it takes 20 years to become a citizen or whatever. Its not my fault that your country is screwed up and if you wanna move take the time do it properly.

It does however seem like A LOT of illegal immigrants have jobs that go undocumented. Those are the people who are getting away with not paying taxes.

I know immigration is a touchy subject for people because it can sometimes tie in to racism (and you all know what i mean). In my opinion though, i dont care who you are If you arent legally supposed to be in this counrty, then you shouldnt.Legal immigration is fine but illegally is just wrong! Killing people is illegal and people freak when that happens no matter what the motivation was...why should this be any different? If you are here illegally you should be punished, you broke the law, just because everyone else is doing it doesnt make it right. You know what, at least we are giving people the opportunity! As a country we could just say no! Plain and simple.

carloslagos said...

In response to Jterry. jaywalking is illegal and it's just wrong! We should scorn those who jaywalk just as much as we do those who kill!

I was being sarcastic but you get the point.

Like i said people don't come here here because they want to do it legally. if it was a shorter process they would. but the only way to make it shorter is if you have relatives who are citizens, get married to a citizen, or if your famous. That rules out 95 percent of people who want to come here.

A lot of times it is our fault that other coutries are screwed up.
We screwed up the middle east, we have oil companies taking mexican oil then selling it back at an even more expensive price, we nuked japan twice, and countless of other things. So in a way it is our fault that othe countries are screwed up.

I'm not supporting illegal immigration but trying to get the truth out on why people come here illegally as opposed to coming here legally and what we should do about it. The wrong thing would be to punish illegal immigrants even more rather than trying to help the deserving ones become legal so that they dont get looked down upon and have rights.

if you were to say "NO plain and simple" then that would make you un-american and hypocritic, by being a quitter and not finding a solution.

adahlquist said...

I think that immigration is not harming anyone. America is a great country with many opportunities and i don't blame immigrants for coming to America in search of the great opportunities. However i do think that they should become citizens of the united states before they come over here. If the immigrants take the time to actually become a citizen then they should be aloud to have all of the opportunities that we have. If anybody is allowed to come over to our country with out becoming a citizen then the population will get way to big to handle. As long as the immigrants come over legally i think everything will be just fine.

adahlquist said...

I completely agree with Jessica when she says that the immigrants should legally become citizens. Immigrants should become citizens, get jobs, and pay taxes like everybody else has to. It is not fair to have people come over to America and not have to pay taxes and basically get to live here for nothing.

adahlquist said...

I agree with Chris when he says that if we let anybody enter the country when ever they want to then the population will be way to big and that we would not be able to keep out terrorists. I think that if everyone just becomes a citizen legally like they should then our country will have less problems and will be a better place to live.

gnalbandian said...

CARLOS, I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY PEOPLE ARE COMING HERE ILLEGALY MORE THAN LEGALY AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO PREVENT IT, BUT THE THING IS THAT NO MATTER WHAT WE DO, GETTING HERE LEGALY WILL ALWAYS BE HARDER THAN GETTING IN ILLEGALY AND SOME IMMIGRANTS WILL ALWAYS BE PUSHED ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY GET HERE THAT WAY. BUT THERE ARE MANY IMMIGRANTS THAT COME HERE LEGALY AND NO MATTER THE SITUATION IT SHOULD BE THE BEAR MINIMUM TO QUALIFY TO BE IN OUR FAIR COUNTRY. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO STEAL BUT NO MATTER THE SITUATION ITS ILLEGAL AND SHOULDNT BE TOLERATED. THE SAME SHOULD GO FOR IMMIGRATION.

LoganCummings said...

I agree with everyone on the whole subject. Everything with being legal and having a good work force to do the dirty jobs, etc... But again as many have already said it is unacceptable for someone just to up and come to the U.S. without going through the proper channels. By doing that it hurts our econonmy because we have to pay certain debts for them and then if they commit a crime there's more money that has to go towards that. I've heard that what they have to go through to become legal is difficult, but I believe it should be that way because if they're going to come to our home land they need to know our customs, language, behaviors, etc. The upside is that it does create a good sense of diversity, and without that the U.S. would just be a whole different place.

ryoung said...

I believe immigration is a good thing. Like others have said it has made our country what it is today. It's obvious that when too many immigrants come, it is a problem for our country. We should try to regulate who and how many come in. I wish people would be able to come into our country legally, which some can, but it is just so difficult for most/\, that many have to come here illegally. But not all illegal immigrants are bad, which for some reason lots of people tend to believe. Most of them come to live a better life and help their children have better lives, not for crime. Also, Many come for the education. Im not trying to say I support them being here illegally, but I know that I wouldnt want to wait most of my life to get into a country or even get denied access. If my family needed to bad enough I would go no matter if it was legal or illegal.

ryoung said...

In response to jterry.. I feel its unfair of you to judge all illegals saying that there unresponsible just because SOME dont pay taxes. In fact, many have social security cards, yes they may be fake but they still pay taxes. Most come to our country because of the economic opportunities. Many of the immigrants work extremely hard with the given opportunities in America. Also it is not there fault their country "sucks" I believe that would be the fault of the government. For example, in Mexico the goverment has been having problems for a long time, and it has been unable to fulfill the job quota. Also there is corruption throughout the mexican government...i just dont see how thats the peoples fault..

asipple1 said...

I think that immigration is great. Our country is very diverse and made up of very different cultures. However, I don't agree with illegal immigration. I understand that they think America is great, but if we just let everyone in America that wanted to live here it would get way too crowded. Where would everyone live or work? So I think that if they want to live here so badly they should do it legally.

asipple1 said...

I totally agree with Chris Spykes. If we let everyone in the population would get to high and we wouldn't be able to keep track of terrorists. The border should be guarded completely and we should have the right to keep those out that we may feel unsafe.

asipple1 said...

I agree with what Gary said about how the legal immigrants shouldn't have to suffer because of the illegals. They aren't effecting our economy and they are what make our country so diverse. They have helped us learn about the many different cultures that are outside of America.

eperez831 said...

TO ADDRESS THE TOPIC THAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS DO NOT PAY TAXES...
THATS NOT TRUE ACTUALLY THEY DO EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE FAKE SSN THEY STILL PAY TAXES AND THE ONES THAT DONT STILL GET THEM TAKEN OUT IF THEIR PAYCHECKS. PEOPLE COMPLAIN BECAUSE THEY LOSE JOBS TO THEM, BUT JUST THINK I MEAN THE ONES THAT GET THE WORST PART ARE THEM BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THEY ARE ILLEGAL THEY ARE TREATED POORLY AND NOT PAID THE FAIR AMOUNT.
HONESTLY IM FINE WITH THEM GETTING THE JOBS MEAN IF THEY CAN DO IT BETTER THEN BY ALL MEANS GIVE THEM THE JOBS.

One can't blame someone for trying to come to this great country. Where it is easy to find jobs. Unlike other countries where jobs are hard to find. it is easy to say no to others trying to obtain a better life because we, as U.S. born citiznes have the great privledge of being a U.S. citizen. We sometimes are blind to the fact of how great this country truly is. We daily take advantage of rights we hold so dearly and boldly. Just because it is a different time does not mean that the Statue of Liberty holds any less truth or reverence. What would have happened if our forefathers would have been told no? would you, would i, be the one trying to get here? Yet i do agree that it would be great if more were legal. But one cannot blame nor condemn one for not only wanting a better life for oneself but also for ones families.

ryoung said...

I agree with waht Brett was saying...We have so many great things that we take for granted everyday. We have lots of rights that people in other countries wouldnt even dream of. The immigrants obviously dont have the same opportunities we do. So I dont think we can truly understand how hard they have it. Which makes it difficult to judge them harshly for being here illegaly when they are only trying to help themselves or their families.

Jessica_Two said...

OH MY GOSH! i never said ALL illegal immigrants dont pay taxes or even used the word irresponsible once. I also never said I was saying no. I just said OUR COUNRTY could not let immigrants in AT ALL. But we do, and i think if we are gonna have allow that privelege it shouldnt be taken advantege of.

Im not targetting anyone I just think illegal immigration is so ridiculous it shouldnt even be a problem its illegal.

Im not even gonna touch the "america messing up other countries" issue. The main country got messed up because of bad leaders.

I just think if its illegal it shouldnt be done (jaywalking included).

Jessica_Two said...

Also, I think its great that they go out and get jobs. At least they are trying. I dont actually know if jobs are given to immigrants over Americans. Ive heard it but never experienced it or anything.

The only thing is that if you are going to get hired you should speak fluent english. Its ridiculous when you cant find something in a store and the employee cant even speak enough english to make an attempt at helping you. (the place that i work has had many complaints about it)

I just always figured ok if im going to another country im gonna buy a little handbook so i can learn the language. I guess some immigrants dont agree with that...

Jessica_Two said...

Ashley, you make a really good point. With the population growing so fast all the immigration is not helping at all. There is only so much land and so many jobs. What would happen when its all gone...? Thats a scary thought

Mrs. Burr said...

WOW, the comments are very diverse this time, just like America. It would seem that most are in favor of immigration, seeing as our ancestors not long ago did that very thing. However, the word illegal seems to be the catalyst to most of the conversations. Some thoughts to ponder:
Legal immigration is easy if you are rich or educated (college) what kind of message is this? The Cream of the Crop mentality is rather eugenic.
Our Language: We don't have one. Our language immigrated from Britain. Is it trully bad to go into workplaces and stores and see signs in other languages? Does it not say great things about America?
Imagine if you will, living conditions so bad that you will leave your country (one you love) come to a country that treats you second class at best so that you can support your family that is still living in the other country. We see these immigrant workers and frown, should we not talk to them and understand their plight. Then judge!
Not paying taxes seems to be the main key issue. Carlos handled the issues, well said. If we were to make it less complex we would be getting more money into the government and we would have more opportunity to stop crime as a whole.

kargo said...

I just want to say that i walked in to the 7 11 by our school and there was a small stand set up with candy bars. I considered buying one from the picture and when i wanted to read the sign and label to see what it was, it was all written in spanish. While i think its a nice gesture to put signs up in multiple languages for our culturally diverse, i dont appreciate the fact that the sign is strictly in spanish. We live in America, our primary language is English. At least have the courtsey to add some EMGLISH labels!

Mrs. Burr said...

Katy, you are absolutely right. I would actually like an explanation from the 7/11 as to why they only have Spanish.

Jessica_Two said...

we should call corporate! or write letters. Letters are always fun.

I've seen that alot though. Stuff all in Espanol... kinda weird. Mostly billboards. You'll be driving along lalala and your like hmm what does that billboard say? and then whaaaaa? its in spanish!

Before we go ahead and get bashful. Let us first remember that what makes America great is the ability to get ahead. And if they do get ahead its because they take the job no one else wants. Also all the elderly on social security are getting the illegal immigrants money. if we get rid the the illegal immigrant. The elderly will say goodbye to their social security money. Keep in mind the illegal immigrant will never see their money.

Anonymous said...

And 7/11 would be stupid if they did not put up spanish espically if the 7/11 is in a predominatly hispanic area. Ironically enough the 7/11 (U.S. company) is doing the same as the illegal immagrant; trying to make money!

CoreyMartin said...

Our culture is built up of so many different cultures that keeping illegal immigrants out seems wrong... But if you'd look at the effects it has you'd see why. When illegal immigrants come over to the United States its taking our money to pay for them, since they don't pay taxes. If they want to come over legally than that's great, but as for people doing it illegally, they can stay out.

CoreyMartin said...

I really like what Ryan said as for putting yourself in their perspective... If I was looking to give my family a better life I actually would go illegally because its a long enduring process of becoming a legal citizen.. Which contradicts my last comment, but whatever.

dpluma said...

Wow i totally agree with what Mrs.Burr has said. lets put our selfs in the their shoes and see how we would like it, most americans do see them as second class and i think that is completely wrong. Most work just as hard as us if not more and all they want is a little piece of the American Dream like we all famine.

CoreyMartin said...

Carlos also has a very good point too. Those of us that aren't even open to finding a new solution for these people are hypocritical and quitters. We should try to find a better way to get it done so that the deserving people get better opportunities.

I also agree with what Mrs. Burr say'd, If my living conditions were really bad and there was a country with better opportunities right next to my country I would immigrate also, Although I still think the border should be completly guarded agianst illegals for safty reasons I also think that if immigrants come over illegally just to work there is nothing morally wrong with that.

8=D said...

and I agree with carlos and corey, I think maybe we need to find a way to help these poeple out a little bit or help help thier government to give them more job opportunities so they won't need to immigrate

i think that yes diversity is a good thing but illegal immagrents are not part of that diversity they are just there to take up space. gary back in the day there was no immagration there was just people trying to creat america they were not trying to come in to seceratly.

mgauntt said...

In response to Carlos's comment, that's just really untrue. It is not America's fault that other countries have problems. Throughout the years, our country has had many close calls, but a great governmental system overall that allows the people to have a say in what goes on. The fact that we used nuclear warfare on Japan actually boosted their economy. It was a horrible tragedy, but when the emperor was found to be fallible, a new government was established, and Japan flourished as a technological power and are today the leading producer of much of our electronics, despite their size. As for the Middle East, religious warfare has been a great source of strife for thousands of years. To say that the reason they haven't flourished because of our thorough involvement over the last 25 years is ridiculous. Mexico's governmental corruption is their downfall, not America's oil sales. It is easier to blame America because we are big and strong, but maybe its not so crazy to think we are a world power because of our many hardworking citizens, strong government, and great educational programs rather than us cheating and lying our way to the top.

mgauntt said...

In response to a few of Carlos's other comments, are you serious? Calling crime a direct result of poverty is ridiculous! People of great social stature and monetary significance commit many crimes too! Poverty doesn't help, but there are way too many stories of people rising above being poor with hard work and dedication for you to excuse crime as a result of poor living conditions. So rather than it being about poverty, its about laziness. If you are not willing to do the work to get here, then there is really no reason that you would do the work to be successful without committing crime.

dbilodeau1 said...

matt i agree with you you on the part that the u.s. has a good set up for the government but the way tht we run may not be as good as its set up. Also they crime rate is kinda proportional to the poverity. The crimes that are commited are mainly by people below the poverty line, you dont see Bill Gates going an robbing banks do ya.
