Hysteria?!
This week we learned how devastating mass fear and hysteria can be. Many people lost their life due to being falsely accused of evils they did not commit. We read an article and timeline showing many different types of people and religion being persecuted due to their beliefs or culture. Are we there again in regards to the Muslim community in America or not? Throughout the week the news has been reporting the controversy in New York City over whether the Muslim community should be able to build a community center approximately 2 blocks away from "Ground Zero." What are you opinions over this matter, please answer using facts from the article, what we have learned in class, what you have seen on the news, etc.
Remember you are to write you own opinion in a respectful manner. If you use slurs or reply to someone's post in a rude and negative manner you will receive a referral and an F.

I think it is stupid how everyone thinks its a bad idea to put a Muslim community right by ground zero...I dont see the big deal about it.....What happen to Freedom of religion.....Stop being little babies and let them build it ....stupid people -_-
I think that the city of new york city should not let them have mosque because it makes everyone crazy
Well, I think people who didn't commit a crime or did anything wrong shouldn't get accused. Mostly everyone feels that way though. I just don't understand why innocent people always get blamed for someone else's actions. I think that some people dislike or loathe Muslims because most of our terrorists come from that ethnicity.. Others, however, don't really care for them and others do like them because they don't judge upon other people.
Do not misunderstand me, I have nothing against the peaceful side of the Muslim community, but I believe that building a mosque where 9/11 happened is a bit insensitive towards the innocent people who lost their lives to a Muslim extremist terrorist attack. Perhaps the people of the mosque are peace-loving, but the other side of the Muslim religion, the extreme side, is something that haunts the American society. It would just be better if the mosque was somewhere else - not where 9/11 happened.
yes, for the Muslim community should be aloud to build there center. The reactions of some of the individuals of the US deeply disturbs me, this is no longer Salem, this is not medieval Europe, they are not terrorist. To those that disagree with my claims i am sorry but i feel that your views are ignorant and discouraging.
people need to see that muslims are actually peaceful people who have been practicing their culture and beliefs here for many years close to ground zero without a monestary. AC
i think that people should them built what they want. mulism are really peaceful people. Not many people see it that why.
I don't think it is a big deal to make the Muslim community next to ground zero. Not all Muslims are terrorists, however, they are going to have to be prepared for criticism from the people of New York City.
The muslims have every right to build their worship center wherever they want. What's the difference between 2 blocks and 2 miles or even 2 states when it comes to terrorists anyway? These people aren't terrorists though so it doesnt matter. A terrorist wouldnt publicly choose a place for building bombs and such things. They're not that smart (which is why they attempt to kill people). They think the best place is definitely inside their homes where no one else is going to come walking in at any given moment.
But anyway, even though the Muslim people have every right to build their center, maybe they shouldn't build it so close to "ground zero" just for their own safety from other people. I know if I were a church leader my number one priority would be my people's safety, not media acknowledgment.
Oh............so we're suppost to use facts from the article. Well then, other religious people have been persecuted in the past. It never turns out the same or even how it's expected to you. So all I can say to these muslim people is good luck!
I think that it is really idiotic the way people are acting. What happened freedom of religion? The US has many different religions and different people. I think they have the right to put the mosque where they want.
I think that they should build a muslim community center 2 blocks from ground zero but it will only make the people of the city of New York even more angry because it was Muslims who caused it all. However, the people of New York live in fear because of the disaster and are still fearing an attack so why are they being so angry about a Muslim community center where normal people go for worship? Stop acting like babies and let the normal Muslim people build their community center!
I think they should be able to build the mosque because its not fair that they wont let them build it because of 9/11 it wasn't their fault, true people of the same religion did it but not the individuals.
This is so typical. We can during the past few years see how political parties with racist values gets bigger and bigger around the world. In France they are the second biggest party and where I live, in Sweden, they might be one of the deciding parties after the upcoming election. People are afraid of what they don't know! Nobody who wants to block the building of the Muslim community center knows anything of the religion in it self. We never hear anything of religion if it is a christian murderer or thief.
Islam is the next biggest religion in the world. I really think that we need to unite it with the western society and understand what it stand for. If the people who want to block the building did this, they would also understand that the terrorist who bombed the world trade center, are a minority that don't stand for anything that Islam stands for.
Unfortunately, I don't think that they, even if they tried, want to understand and therefore I'm actually quite worried that the city of New york are about to commit a big mistake not building the community center. That's just racism.
The Muslims should be able to build their Mosque. This is a free country. Their rights are just the same as ours. It may not be safe building it so close to "Ground Zero" but it's a risk they must be willing to take.
Wouldn't this kind of offend the families of the people who died in 9/11 like firefighters?
They should obviously be able to build the Mosque, look at the first amendment. Hell, if they wanted to build a memorial to 9/11 hijackers right on the spot of the trade towers they could do that.
Would it be despicable? Yes.
Would it be permissible? Yes.
This is America, and in America sometimes jerks win, but that's the first amendment. The first amendment applies all the time even if it is offensive. Unpopular ideas are allowed to win, and that's good because how can you stop the bad ideas without also stopping the good ideas?
But I hate Islam, as I do with almost all organized religions. I think it's a violent, despicable religion. Look up Taqiyya or Sharia Law. Look at the correlation between Islamic countries and high violence. I don't think anyone should be allowed to do harm to their fellow man. Theism is, in every instance, is irrational.
i don't we should let then build a mosque on ground zero, i just don't think it's appropriate considering what happen. plus i think it would create a lot of problems if it was built.
