Democracy: the political orientation of those who favor government by the people or by their elected representativesYet this was denied Native Americans until the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 gave them that right. In 1956 the State of Utah became the last State to grant that right.
Many states, including, New Mexico overtly did not allow Native Americans to vote until 1962. Which is abysmal given that New Mexico has a large Native population.
Denied to African American males until the 15th Amendment which states:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
And denied to American women until August of 1920, when the 19th Amendment was signed stating:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
We have learned in class the plight of the Native Americans, African Americans pre-Civil War, and now the fight American women had to go through in order to vote.
