Iron Jawed Angels

Democracy: the political orientation of those who favor government by the people or by their elected representatives

Yet this was denied Native Americans until the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 gave them that right. In 1956 the State of Utah became the last State to grant that right.
Many states, including, New Mexico overtly did not allow Native Americans to vote until 1962. Which is abysmal given that New Mexico has a large Native population.

Denied to African American males until the 15th Amendment which states:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

And denied to American women until August of 1920, when the 19th Amendment was signed stating:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

We have learned in class the plight of the Native Americans, African Americans pre-Civil War, and now the fight American women had to go through in order to vote.

1. I thought the movie was pretty good and rather powerful.

2. My views on the concept of voting being important haven't really changed but I do get the importance of voting to people. It is important to have the ability to speak up against your government but even though we are granted these freedoms it feel it doesn't really do much for it.

I thought the movie was really entertaining to say the least. It proved that men and women are equal but people still these days disagree. It was mind blowing how determined Alice Paul was and her friends that went along with her. I have great respect for her, now that I know what she did and how she never gave up, even when she was punished for standing up for women's rights.

My views on voting have changed slightly, I never really thought it was that big of a deal, but now I see why people go all crazy over it.

1) i enjoyed the movie vary much i find it inspiring and vary heart felt.

2) No not at all, it has more like strengthened my views on the subject. For i feel the ability to vote is more then just a privilege or right, to me it is a duty and responsibility as a citizen to do just as such. Also that all citizens have that right to vote no matter social standing, race, sex, and creed.

I was completely shocked to see how these women were treated and what they had to go through to gain their right to vote. These women should have never been sent to prison and abused. I do understand that voting is very important and they everyone with the ability to vote should, because everyone has a voice and it should be heard.

1. my reaction to the movie: the movie was intense and i know that it was only worse when it really happened. I ended up crying throughout the whole last section we watched. It was like I could feel their pain, their hope, their joy. lol
2. my views have only become stronger because of the movie.

1) I think the movie was upsetting. I hate Wilson now. He kept making ridiculous excuses as to justify his means to punish the suffragists and didn't properly care for them in the jail. Horrible food with worms.. force feeding, beatings... It was awful! I feel sorry for Alice, too. She gave up everything for women's right to vote and didn't marry either. She had to die lonely.
2) I suppose my views on voting changed slightly. I really didn't used to care if I was able to vote or not, but now, seeing how men and women are opposites of each other from this movie.. I say we need a woman's vote in too, because they seem to know feeling more than men. Empathy and compassion. A vote is a fire escape! lol >.> Men these days, right? :P

1. Iron Jawed Angels surprised me. I didn't know women suffered that badly in order to gain their right to vote, and now that I do, it gives me an entirely knew background to women voting. Whereas before I had thought they only protested a little and the amendment was passed with ease.

2. My views have changed since watching this movie. Everyone, including women, has been allowed to vote since I was born. So, while I realize the importance to voting, I hadn't been aware to exactly how important it was to women before the 19th amendment. But, I can't blame them, I'd be just as enthusiastic and driven to get a say in the government under which I live.

I thought the movie was awesome. The force feeding was graphic but it shows us how horribly those women were treated and how they were willing to do anything for their cause.
My views have changed. To have your voice heard is a big deal. I never knew what women had to go through to get our vote. Those were brave women.

1) "Iron Jawed Angels" was, quite frankly, a very moving film. I have no doubt in my mind that Alice Paul and her accomplices should enjoy the status of martyrdom, the likes of which worn by other heroic martyrs such as Jacques DeMolay, Joan De Arc, Damon and Pythias, Martin Luther King Jr. and so on. Such courage and such steadfast faith is truly admirable and these women should be respected and their ideals emulated.
2) I have always felt that voting is a privilage not to be taken for granted. Our say in our government is essential and no voice should EVER be stifled. To choose not to vote is not only disrespectful to all those who fought for that right, but irresponsible and rather base.

i agree with jen, it was mind boggling how determined Alice was, and without her friends she would have never continued to press on with determination because she too, just like every one of us got discouraged, and couldn't find the strength to go on. She was a person just like us, and that shows us what we are all capable of.

Jorge, I totally agree with you. After watching Iron Jawed Angels, I feel more grateful to have the right to vote, even though I don't really care if I, myself, am able to vote. I don't know. Alice's strength really inspired me. If I ever go to jail, I'll go on hunger strike too, if I don't like the food. (Not that I ever would, but.. *coughs*) :)

1) I really liked the movie. It was powerful in it's own sense. I admire Alice Paul and the suffragists very much. She had the courage to do something and keep on doing that something even when it seemed impossible. It truly puts our(mine at least) lives in prospective. Nothing is impossible until failure is the only constant outcome. Or something like that.

2)I have more of a respect for voting now. Before I used to think that if you didn't vote, you didn't have the right to complain. But now it's more of you should vote because it's something that has been fought for and some died just so you could state your own individual opinion.

3) I agree with Sean and Ethan on #2. I knew there was a struggle, i just didn't know the extent of it.

Now, look at both sides of the coin, yes wilson was acting rather unreasonable, However you'd be making exuses too if you were tied up with a war in europe and here comes along another upon your very doorstep. Imagine the headache he must've had. I'm not picking sides, just look at this from a different perspective.
And also, she did not die alone, she died with worthy friends. She CHOOSE not to marry, for her own reasons. She could've just as easily married after the vote was won, she was still very young.

Actually, even before the war, Wilson was making excuses and in a way, he even used the WAR as an excuse hoping they would stop picketing. She wasn't hat young back in the day. Once a woman turned 30, and was unmarried, she was considered a spinster. She was 32 when it ended. :,(

1. I think the movie really helped emotionally impact people, and help people see how hard these women truly tried to get the voting right. It really helped me see the details of what they did, but I understood that it was very difficult to get the voting right, but I'm sure no one had any idea how bad they truly suffered, and it's cool to know about it.

2. My views are definitely still the same, I believe that everyone has the right to vote and nothing should stand in the way because we have freedom and we live in a democracy.

2. My views on the importance of voting has somewhat changed from seeing what these women went through, & how much of their life they put into something that was needed in America; I'm very appreciative of it.

Heather LeBlanc said...

This movie was absolutely amazing; the fact that all of these women hung in there and gave up everything to fight for women's rights is truly inspiring. I personally feel that these woman should be praised and thanks immensely, for women are just as important as men, if not more, and should be allotted the same respect and privileges men receive. My views have completely changed on voting, the fact that these women went through all of that just for us, it would be a disgrace to not serve them and thank them by taking advantage and voting.
Also, I agree with Brittini, When they were at the parade, and picketing, those men were so vulgar and piggish; spitting and hitting them, shoving them to the floor. God forbid I had been a lady of that time, I would have been right there with those women, decking ignorant men in the faces.

1. I loved the movie "Iron Jawed Angles", it depicted the whole women's rights situation very well. It showed how hard they really had to fight for the simplest thing as voting. I found that i had to cover my eyes at the force feeding part, but you don't realize how bad they had it until you really see the tube go down their throat and then them throwing ll the food up. I loved the movie and hope to see it again.
2. My views on voting actually changed, i never really noticed how bad they had to fight for what they believed in. I am so glad that we had women like ALice Paul to fight for something so much and finally got her way. I honestly don't think i would have fought that hard only because i would have been terrified.
3. I completely agree with you Sara, those women were extremely brave for what they did. I wish i could say that i have dont something like that in my life but for some reason i dont think its going to happen.

1) The movie really showed that women had to go through terrible things in order to get the right to vote the same that the men had forever. When they were sent to jail, that was like hell because they were put into forced labor and when one of the women went on a hunger-strike, being force-fed was a cruel act and violated one of the Constitutional Amendments.
2) I had no idea that women had to truly fight for everything that they deserved to have because they deserved to have equal rights for everyone, including all women around the country.
3) I agree with Spencer Katoa's second response to the views on women's right to vote because the views have changed for every citizen that lived in the U.S. on March 13, 1920. After that single event that all changed after a senator got a tellagram that said,"Don't come home if you don't vote for woman's rights," and that's when the U.S. was placed into balance of all citizens of both sex.

Pgruber said...

I feel these women were very brave and courageous for fighting for what they believe. They were willing to give up their lives for a cause in which they shouldn't have had to fight.
I now know why women stress the importance of voting because it sure wasn't handed to them on a silver platter. It would be an insult ,to these women who risked everything, if women these days did't vote "just because."
I agree with you Jen about how those suffragists risked everything for the right to vote, and how important it is to vote.

No one and I mean NO ONE should EVER have to go through something like this women had too. It was very disrespectful in so many different ways.

1.I felt sad for the people who had to go through this and that the government had to be pressured into passing this amendment because they said that the women were fine but they were being force fed which is against the eighth amendment so technically the government had to or else there would be a lot of trouble. 2.My views on the importance of voting has changed somewhat for I thought that voting was just to vote but now I realize that it is not just to vote it is to have a voice in a country where you are allowed to have a voice.

1. This movie was a very interesting. It explained a lot and was an attention catcher. It made me think and be grateful that there were people like Alice Paul who helped woman vote. And to think that just because she wrote one letter, who got to the senators wife, that that's the climax of why the vote got passed. Once someone suffers and it gets in the paper, the country sees it differently. When really woman were suffering...just not physically.

2. My views have definitely changed. This movie made me realize that if they went through so much for woman that we should vote. And theres no reason not to, the woman got tortured for us and even though they may be gone, the least we could do is vote and use our freedom.

2. my views of the movie have changed and definitely the women's vote counts for a lot and it's very important.

1. I think that the movie had alot of powerful scenes and it, was made really good.

2. My views on voting have never changed, but i think that people have the right to vote and no one can take it away.

1. i liked the movie because i feel that being able to see the things that happened makes it all the more different and all the more easier to understand. Plus the was they showed what happened made it even more powerful.
2. Yes they have, before i didn't really care if i could vote or not but now seeing what all those women went through made such a difference. i can't wait to vote!
3. i agree with caitlin about how wilson acted horrible towered the women and i would like to punch him in the face after seeing this movie.

1. I enjoyed the movie. It powerfully portrayed the struggle that women went through to get the right to vote. It's easy to read about it in books and not look at the names as actual people, but the movie connects you to them and lets you see them as human beings rather than simply names.

2. My views haven't really changed. Voting is an important right to have, and I can appreciate that people went through a great deal to get that right. But my personal views are that politicians are almost always corrupt, and I sort of take South Park's stance on it....It's a choice between two...not very appealing items. I have lots of respect for those women, but for me it's more the concept that we have the option that is important, because we are looked upon as political equals with as much to say as any other citizen.
3. @ Caitlin: Sexism goes both ways. Men are capable of empathy and compassion, too. The women in this movie were fighting for gender equality...Not superiority. Basing your opinions of a person solely on gender is just as bad as basing it off of race or heritage. People are individuals; just as not all women are the same, not all men are the same. Human beings are too complex to be defined by only one characteristic

Zach Langford said...

1) I feel that this movie tries to show the suffering that these women went through to get their right to vote. As had happened before, with blacks and other races, hey where imprisoned and treated very poorly based on what they believed. This movie unlike many other movies on this sort of topic, showed vividly what was done to these activists.

2) My views on voting haven't changed, but just adds to the sense of duty we should all have to succeed in our right to vote. What these women have gone through, African Americans, and EVERY race in this country, when we fought our revolution; should show we wanted this right. Now, as we have it we should not forget about it and loose this right. Voting lets us have our say and not be "ruled over" but self governed.

Samantha Nielsen said...

I agree with duff because It would be crazy for us not to vote after everything they went through to get us that right.I am also ammazzed by their courge and hard work.

1. Iron Jawed Angels, I thought, was a really good movie. I liked it a lot. How they portrayed everything that happened to achieve the rights of women was very interesting. I never really knew exactly what they went through and I thought the movie did a great job of re-enacting the time.

2. My views on voting have slightly changed. I always thought that when I was old enough to vote, I would. Now I definitely will vote not only because I want to but because of how hard women worked and gave their all to give us these rights. It almost seems a little ridiculous to not take advantage of being able to vote.

3. I agree with Joshua. 100%. Women did work hard and went over the hills and through the woods to get their rights. Also voting is important because you need to have a voice. Perfect and well said.

1) First of all, at first this i thought it was just another movie to fall asleep to, however, as i was on my way to sleep i heard something interesting that grabbed my attention. I started paying attention and sooner than later i actually thought this movie was very special for women as for men because it took bravery, suffrage, blood, and tears for women to get their voices in the presidents head.

2) My views on voting have changed because i use to believe that a vote, just one vote, would not change the situation or the law and the views of others.

PGiguere said...

1. Iron Jawed Angels was a very good and inspirational movie. It was intense and got the point across. the power that these woman gained was very important and amazing as to how far people would go or how harsh others could be. it makes me ask myself, how far would you go?

2.i never thought that one vote could make a difference but now i realize that without that one vote, woman would not have rights today. woman did a lot to get that one vote and it was worth it.

Anonymous said...

1. Well i thought the movie was pretty good to be onest it showed what women were willing to do to get egual rights very well.
2. I think about voting and i dont think its a big deal but after watching the movie im starting to think that voting is pretty important now.

1. Iron Jawed Angels was an AMAZING movie, it really made me realize what women had to go through in order for women to vote. Seeing that Alice Paul was force fed for her right made me wonder what I would do for this cause. Mrs. Leighton stayed in the prison without her daughters which is something I know would be hard for me to do. I knew women went through a lot for us to have this right, but I never knew that they went through so much pain.

2. Voting is something I never thought I would end up doing once i reached the age of 18, but due to watching this movie and seeing what women have gone through I will now FOR SURE vote for every election possible. I'd hate to not and have a guilt down inside just by not voting, I think all women should vote now...

tcervantes said...

1. The movie iron jawed angels was one of the best movies ive seen. it was kind of sad how much women had to go through just to be seen as equal among men. alice paul was in a way tortured for standing up for her beliefs and i dont think anyone should have to endure that ever. it kind of makes you feel proud for being a woman because they went through so much and never gave up.

2. my views on the importance of voting havent really changed at all because ive always seen it as an extremely important matter. without the right to vote, you take away the voice we have in the government.

Jess T. said...

1) It was very moving.. I never realized that women had to go through all of that just to vote.. It now means a lot to me. I never really thought i would vote right away, but now.. That view has changed and I am going to make sure I do.

2) Yes! I already said this, but I am going to vote ASAP. One vote has affected some major outcomes, that one vote could be mine.

3) @Theresa Murray, I completly agree with everything you said, especially when you said that these women were treated terribly and they shouldn't have been.

Ascerbo said...

1. Iron Jawed Angels was a good movie, just how realistic the actors were on the character.
2. My view on voting hasn't really changed but i understand how important it is to have a voice in the government. Because it is a democracy and we the people have the choice to pick who we want as our officials.

1) I really thought that the movie was really inspiring and it was heartfelt to see what they went through to get the outcome they wanted.

2)It has really changed my point of view of what they went through. I did not know that they went through such hard things. I really respect all woman that had to go through this and they did such an excellent achievement.

3) I really like with what Samantha said because that is how i always looked at it to like i really did not care about it at all until I saw this movie.

1. I loved the movie. It was touching. Not quite a tear-jerker, but close. It was hard to watch the force-feeding, though. I know its history but i don't like how she never got together with Mr. Weissman(?).
2. No, I still think voting is important. Everyone's voice should be heard, and then a compromise made to satisfy most everyone.

1. The movie that we watched, "Iron Jawed Angels" was a very powerful and moving movie. It was hard to watch some of the things that the women went through without crying. I loved the movie.

2. My views have been changed. I really didn't plan to vote when I am older, just because I really dislike politics and government, but seeing what these women had to go through, and not seeing the worst of it, makes me feel a bit ashamed for not wanting to vote while having the right. I will never take the right to vote for granted ever again.

to be honest, i expected this movie to just be the 'average keep the classroom busy but educated about what we're learning about', but it ended up being a really touching and intense movie. i really enjoyed it, and i had chills throughout the whole thing.

i always thought it was important for women to vote, for anyone to vote who is under control of the government. but my view on it was that women stood around and picketed, and no harm was done to them. obviously, it was a wake up call when the women were brutally punished and hurt due to their reasonable beliefs.

Iron Jawed Angels was a terrific movie, much better than what I expected. It captured the emotional taunting that women went through in order to get their voice and freedom.

Never take it for granted, voting is our responsibility as individuals to voice you opinion. Only thing worse than not voting would be voting for something you know nothing about. The leaders of this country, the laws, society, and the world we live in is up to the people. Know whats going on in the world so that you and the american citizens can love the life they live and get the freedom we all deserve.

Ascerbo said...

3. I agree with kdickinson, it is important to have a vote than a compromise

1. Iron Jawed Angels was a movie that told it how it was and was very raw on its materials. I truly enjoyed the movie. It proved that these women would refuse to eat even when they were force fed to stand up for what they believed in. These women were relentless. I believe that Alice Paul is a true hero and role model to the American woman.
2. I believe that voting is a very important thing to do. Especially for women. After watching the movie and seeing what these women went through to have their voice heard, I think that everyone should try and make themselves be heard. People continually complain about our government today but then to hear that they didn't vote, makes their comment pointless because they didn't even try to make a change.
3. Sam, I completely agree with you on this one. Women really need to vote to make themselves heard. After seeing what Alice Paul went through, I think that it would be a slap in the face if women refuse to vote.

1. The movie Iron Jawed Angels was a really touching movie. I didn't think about how important the subject was until I watched it and received a better understanding of how unfair women were treated back then. I would have to say that Alice Paul is one I have ever known/heard/learned about.

2. I never really had the care to think about voting when I get older but watching this movie made my views change. I will now vote when I am older because of how hard and long the women fought for that right. It made me understand that we have a voice in the government and laws that we live under.

I thought iron jawed angels was an amazing movie!
I loved how every woman that joined the suffragist group gave up everything they had just to make Congress pass a law for women to vote which was sad how they were treated. They all suffered for a cause that should've been easily dealt with. I now realize men can be complete assholes just because of superiority. (Excuse my language) let's hope no more laws have to be passed the way alice paul and her ladies had to go through to get womans voting rights.

I know it is important because voting gives us the right to decide our future, and have a voice in our government. That treasure is one that we shouldn't take for granted, because many others in different countries don't even have that option.
