The highest measure of democracy is neither the 'extent of freedom' nor the 'extent of equality', but rather the highest measure of participation.

NEW VERSUS OLD CULTURE
After reviewing the changes in old and new culture of the 20's what do you think are some of the changes between your parents culture as teens and yours. Come up with at least two aspects that you feel are different and the impact on society due to these changes.
I think that it was normal for the parents that the children worked at such a young age in the 20's.The parents of todays culture mind if the children work this days because we are not use to seeing that in more modern days.
I THINK THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND MY PARENTS IS THAT THEY USED TO STRUGGLE IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND I DIDNT. AS TEENS THEY HAD TO WORK VERY EARLY AND ABANDON SCHOOL JUST TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES. MY DAD HAD LIKE TEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND HE HAD TO SELL NEWSPAPERS AFTER SCHOOL JUST TO BUY A LOAF OF BREAD TO SHARE BETWEEN THEM. ALSO DUE TO SADDAM HUSEIN'S HOLD ON THE COUNTRY, IT WAS IMMPOSSIBLE TO GO TO COLLEGE UNLESS YOU SIGN UNDER HIS POLITICAL PARTY. WHICH EXPLAINS WHY HE MOVED TO THE U.S. BUT THE FACT THAT I WAS BORN AND RAISED HERE AND THAT HE DIDNT HAVE THAT PRIVELEDGE IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR TIMES.
Some things that have changed and made an impact on today's society since my mom was a teen are drugs and technology. Nobody really thinks about how much these two things have evolved since then. They have also made a MAJOR impact in today's society, not a very good one on the drug part. Technology has advanced in several ways such as, internet, cell phones, ipods, etc. Drugs have advanced in ways such as, more people are making, smuggling, selling, using, and even dying from drugs.
I think that if you compared my mom's teen years to my teen years is not that much different except that my mom would party a lot more then I do!! But other then that I am a lot like my mom was when she was my age except for the whole technology thing like cell phones and iPods etc. My mom makes fun of me because back when she was a teen they didn't a have all that stuff and if I get it taken its like I lose my whole life.
One of the major things that is different in our present time and when our parents were teenagers is the working environment. Today, most kids can only start working at age 16 for corporations that pay taxes and are help run by the government. In the 20's children were working in sweatshops and factories at a much younger age probably starting as young as 6 or 7 years old. Also a big difference is technology and material things. Although in the 1920's, many people started to want the latest fashions, technology, etc., it has multiplied by huge portions to our era. During the 20's, the American dream of wanting to work hard to achieve your success and just be an overall hard working, honest person , vanished. The new dream was to do as little work for the money you wanted to be successful and own all the different things that you wanted to. The impact of society of all these drastic changes are huge because it formed a whole new culture of how we live today. If everything was so instant and fast like people want it now, then most people would be upset.
I agree with Gary in the sense that education played a big role as a difference between the two time periods. So many scholarships and financial aids are available during the present times that were never even dreamed of before the 1920's and our parents era. According to my parents, they worked a lot more and a lot harder for the achievement of smaller goals then we do today.
The changes from when my parents grew up in the 70's and us growing up in the 2000's is way different. For one we have different technology, like iPods, internet, computers, and cell phones. They didn't have any of that. Also, when my parents were kids, their parents didn't care that they came home from school at 3, and got home at 7, nowadays, our parents almost always know where we are at at all times.
TECHNOLOGY WAS WAY DIFFERENT BACK THEN. I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE PEOPLE GATHERING AROUND A LAMP AND GAZING IN AWE AT IT AS THEY TURN IT ON AND OFF. I'M SURE TECHNOLOGY WAS A LITTLE MORE ADVANCED THEN THAT BUT IT WAS STILL SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT TO TODAY'S. I'M SURE THAT THE FACT THAT THERE WASN'T AN INTERNET OR MP3S MUST HAVE MADE IT HARD TO LIVE BACK THEN.
The main difference from when my parents grew up vs. now is technology. When they were going up there weren't cell phones or computers. They didn't even have a television until they were 10 I think. They weren't dependent on technology or anything along those lines like many people now are. Another difference is money. Prices of consumer goods have gone up so much since my parents were teens. They remember when things we now pay dollars for were just cents.
I also agree about what people are saying dealing with education. Back when my parents were teens and going to college opportunities to do so weren't as readily available. Now we have loans and scholarships. No one could have ever imagined such things when they were younger. Many people just started working directly after high school or whenever the stopped attending school. Now the majority of people attend college.
I think there's definitely a lot of things different between my generation and my parents generation. For instance, they always say I can't do some of the things they did because things were...different back then. That means the world might have been a safer place back then, because there's a lot more violence and "creepers" in todays world.
ANOTHER MAJOR DIFFERENCE IS FADS. IF YOU HAVE A GRANDFATHER WHO HAS AN 8 TRACK PLAYER AND DOES THE BOOGALOO TO SOME OLD JAZZ SONGS, YOU THINK ITS CHEESY, BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT THAT WAS PROBABLY THE POPULAR THING TO DO BACK THEN. ITS SIMILAR TO THINKING OF YOURSELF AS AN OLD MAN DOING THE CRIP WALK TO DR DRE AND YOUR GRANDKIDS TELL YOU HOW CHEESY YOU ARE WHILE THEY LISTEN TO THEIR POPULAR MUSIC. ANY WAY YOU SEE IT, THIS ASPECT OF LIFE IS EXTREMELY SIMILAR NO MATTER WHAT GENERATION YOU LOOK AT EXCEPT THE FACT THAT THEY AREN'T ALL LISTENING TO THE SAME SONGS.
I think the biggest difference between my parents' generation and my generation is technology. Today's technology is incredible they keep coming up with more and more things that make life easier and more exciting. Back when my parents were teenagers there were not computers or Ipods or even xboxs. They were not dependent on technology at all and in this generation most of our lives are very dependent on technology. Another big change is the cost of products. When my parents were young coke was 5 cents and now it is right around a dollar. Some things today can cost over a 1000 percent more than they used to. Thats crazy! We make more money today but i think in comparison things were definitely cheaper back then.
I agree with Colin I think the working environment has changed drastically. Back then everybody was working in sweatshops as soon as they could. Now a days we can't work until 16 at least in most places. I personally am glad that we didn't have to work when we were young and get to wait until we want to.
I agree with Ashley i think drugs have really changed since our parents generation. Now many people use them on a daily basis and can make tons of money selling them. Back then i don't think that many people really thought about selling them or even using them. Our generation has a bigger problem with drugs then our parents generation.
I also agree with alec in the fact that illegal drugs are so widespread and common in today's culture. In the 20's, it was more about alcohol then drugs like meth, marijuana, cocaine, etc. But, today's society has probably exceeded the drinking amounts immensely contrasted to the prohibition era. The illegal drugs, sadly, have overtaken a good number of people's lives in the U.S. and has affected the society greatly in the fact of all the money that this business makes. It's amazing how all these multi-million dollar dealers make money of illegal drugs, but i guess the only reason they are that wealthy is because society's want for and consumption of them.
well, my mom goes on and on and on and on about how things were different when she was a kid. "I used to ride my bike to the movies, and the penny candy store, and go down town." My parents are completely shoked with the fact that riding a bike isnt really "cool" anymore. Technology is a big difference. My mom has street smarts and my brother who doesnt get involved in technology either and he is a lot more street smart. Also parents weren't as worried about their kids as they are today. Crime has gone up? Or maybe just awareness of crime? Communication (which deals largely in technology) is also a major difference. People dont visit as much as they used to.
I think drugs aren't really that different. I guess younger kids are getting into it and I think in my mom's day it was for the older kids. Now you find that the 7th graders are getting busted for drugs.
dillon, I dont agree at all with the fact that parents always know where their kids are. If anything they know even less than back in the day. When my mom was a kid she was a wanderer. She roamed all over but they didn't have cars like all these kids these days. If they needed to find her they had the close friends numbers and someone knew where they were. Just because kids have cell phones doenst change it either. It just makes it easier to lie.
I agree with Jessica, It's a lot easier to lie through things now days compared to when my parents were teens. When my parents were kids there was the same drugs and partying going on as there is now. The only difference is that the advancement in our world has just made it easier for us kids now to get the drugs and alcohol. I do not see a HUGE difference in our time and their time. But I do believe that it seems to be harder for parents or at least my parents to understand that living in today’s world is very difficult and can be more challenging than what they had to live through.
I personally disagree with adahlquist, I have talked to my parents about what the whole drug situation before, to see what it was like when they were in high school; they said that there was not much of a difference as to today's world. I’m pretty sure someone thought of the idea to sell the drugs. It doesn’t take a genius to think of some way to make money. I do believe that it was probably more discrete back then that’s why the idea of no one doing it comes to mind. In today's world we all know at least one person who does or has sold some kind of drung, its better known for kids to do that now. Also another difference is that my parents worked pretty much full time all the time. They continue to nag at me because I'm still looking for a job. It is more difficult to get a job now than it was when they were teens. There are also more rules and laws in these present days than there used to be in their past. More technology has been enhanced making our day in time easier for us but more complicated for those who grew up not knowing what a simple computer was. There are many similarities in our world and our parents’ world, in our world there just seems to be fewer secrets about what is going on around us. This was caused by our lovely enhancement in technology.
I believe the kids that set the tone in the 20's set it for most if not all generations to come. As Colin said the 20's marked the changing of the american dream. It changed from work hard and have integrity and honor in what you do, to try to get as much as you can while having the most fun as possible with little work. That has affected our generation as well as the generations before us.
maybe i take a lot of things for granted but i know i could live without a lot of this technology stuff. yes, it does i suppose make certain things easier, but i sometimes wish that things werent so hecktic. I wish sometimes things would slow down, but this is the society we live in. And this is the society we "pay" it to be. but as far as the difference between my dad and moms generation contrasted to our own. ours is a lot more i want it, and i want it now, due to the technology we have. And because of this so called microwave society we dont have patience.
There are many differences and similarities between my parent and my generation. One of the differences is that drugs today are alot more accessible to young people and are harder and more addictive drugs. Marijuana has been around for decades, but crack and meth are alot easier to buy and make. Another difference is that teens today tend to have more material items and money than in my parents generation. In my parents days you didn't see the type of cars in the school parking lot that you do today. In general, teens today have more access to many more things than my parents generation.
A giant difference between the two cultures is technology. The cell phone has greatly increased communication between people. My parents tell me they only had one phone line in their family (home phone). Talking to friends on the go wasn't possible. Now, there is never a time where one of us is out of the 'know'. Because of cell phones we always know where someone is (as long as they answer).
I agree with Brett. I think alot of people today are caught up with moving fast, getting things done too quickly, and not really slowing down enough to enjoy life. I think technology has not helped in teaching us to be patient...we tend to want things now.
I think that one of the main differences that me and my mom have growing up as teens is that she grew up in a very small town in new jersey with 7 brothers and sisters. my grandmother worked in the factories for 16 hour days just to support them. When my mom was a teen everyone knew everyone in town and you all went to the same school that was from K-12th grade.
I think one of the main differences me and my father have as teens is life styles. He started working at a very young age to help support his family as much as he could and was on the streets a lot. Also he didn't have the choices that most of us have today with education. Today teens can do anything they want as long as they set their mind to it and try
Something my aunts and uncles always tell me is that our generation is wasteful. My parents and grandparents were more aware of the strain the depression caused that when they see us pour the milk out of our cereal they go crazy and scream about saving it lol. Another thing is they say that our generation is lazy and lacks motivation. I dont know if this is due to a lack of influence in our upbringing or child labor laws, but im curious to know.
I agree with Brett that the 20's shaped what our view of the american dream was. They thought of the dream as someone who worked hard and had a loving family as the "American Dream". Despite what some think as the american dream of greed and lust, the people of the 20's shaped men of integrity and honesty.
I agree with Derek, me and my father have very different lifestyles, because the way we were raised. He is a hard worker and had to provide for his family at the age of 12. I, on the other hand, have an easy job where it doesn't matter at all.
Well, My life is quite different from my parents. My dad came from Mexico to A.Z. at a young age and lived in a small farming town. Later on, he wasn't able to finish school and began working when he was young. My step-mom grew up in Durango Mexico all her life and came to A.Z when she was around 18. So during that time she had to endure the huge culture clash of the U.S. and learn the language.
Compared to them, I have it easy and I'm grateful that I do! I'm lucky that I just have to focus on school and my parents express how much getting an education really sets you up for a better life. So that motivated me to go to college. I'm a student at Shadow and at Paradise Valley Community College. I am the first in my family's generation to get accepted into college and I plan to continue my education at NAU!!!
Not only did society's values change, but it also depends where people grew up and what culture they are from.
well for one thing is that we didnt have to start working as early as alot of our parents did.. i mean im 16 and i barley got my first job this yr.. as for my dad who had to quit school and start working just so he could help out my granparents but that was real normal back then.. and there just seems to be alot of differnces in between us and them thanx to the advancment in technology we have... but i think that it wasnt for that we probably would have done alot of the things they did growing up..
ok there are alot of changes and impacts on society from the 20s to my parents childhood to mine. One aspect that i feel has changed society is music. The attuitude of music has drasticaly changed throughout history. From big bad and swing to heavy rock and rap. Another aspect is peoples attuitudes towards one another. Respect as a major part of it. i agree with ashley that drugs and technology are another great impact which can go along with my aspects. Drugs has changed music and also with gary with value. These things were such highs and lows in the 20s that now are part of everyday life, that we are used to, when before no one was used to drugs or low values.
