Sectionalism versus Nationalism
Review the definition of sectionalism and nationalism using your class notes, find two current (within the last 40 years) examples of sectionalism and two of nationalism. After you have your examples, state whether you feel they are good or bad for the country. In other words do/did they cause negative reactions. You need only one entry this week, you do not need to respond to another entry.

Sectionalism: 1. Alaska Independence movement
2. SW border control
Nationalism: 1. Patriot act
2. Draft
Most of these examples are good but it is he bad ones like above (minus border control) that get the most attention. there needs to be a balance between both so neither can become to wide spread and radical.
Sectionalism: 1. Intersection photo radar cameras.
2. Metro rail system.
Nationalism: 1. Voting age
2. miranda rights avalible.
All of these examples that i have chose are great in my opinion. I say that because with all of the examples it requires you to be muture about the situations. It also can help out the people with, and or around you.
sectionalism: 1. south invention of the cotton gin.
2. slavery becomes even so its wasn't ok.
nationalism: 1. tariff protecting domestic industry.
2. without the u.s bank you had economic depression so its was ok
Sectionalism:
1. Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) Laws-There are obviously mixed views of these laws. On one side, the college students advocate for an age lower than 21. Their main argument is the increase of binge drinking within college campuses. Concerned parents and other adults support these laws. They have substantial evidence showing a MLDA at the age of 21 reduces traffic accidents and lowers alcohol abuse among teenagers.
2. Border Control in SW U.S.- Many Americans are in favor of increasing border control to stop illegal immigrants from sneaking into the U.S.
Nationalism:
1. Pearl Harbor- After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States immediately joined the WWII. The attack enraged U.S. citizens to the extent that Japanese-Americans were forcefully put into internment camps.
2. 9/11- In a way, this terrorist attack brought our nation closer together. American flags were proudly displayed in many neighborhoods and commercials pointed out the strength of our nation.
Nationalism:
1. College Cost Reduction Act [2007]
2. National Voting Rights Act [1965] ((Close enough))
Sectionalism:
1. Segregation [All U.S. history]
2. Michigan Reps. for Chrysler [1980s]
I think that both the Nationalistic things are good for our country. The College Cost Reduction Act will be good for the people, as their rates won't be as high for loans. The National Voting Rights Act allows EVERYONE to vote.
I also think that both Sectionalistic things are bad because segregation has been happening for as long as anyone can remember, but it is not beneficial or supported by all areas. In the 80s, some senators and congressman in Michigan wanted to keep Chrysler running, and not go out of business. They got money for the car corporation, and this was what was thought to be best for Michigan's economy.
Nationalism:
Missouri compromise: Yes it was good at the time, its whole purpose was to keep the people happy and that is exactly what did. It was put in place to keep things even between free states and slave states and it worked for a while.
Indian Removal Act: No this showed that that this state will promise one thing then we its inconvenient to us we do what best helps our country and do not care about anything else like our own constitution.
Sectionalism:
Industrial revolution: this was good for the people though it brought out the worst slave trade in years it was also when the new country was starting to become more productive and less reliant.
South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification: this was good and bad, it showed that the states still had their own identity and was willing to stand by the constitution. But it also started splitting up the states and preparing to them for war.
Sectionalism: The voting in the south. I really don't think everybody in the south likes McCain they just aren't diggin Obamas color.
Nationalism: uhmmmm i dont know 9/11? the whole nation came together and became liiike super patriotic and fun stuff like that
Sectionalism:
1 Metro Rail
2 Segeration
Nationalism
1 Pearl Harbor
2 Border battle
Sectionalism.
1. Drinking and smoking age. Kids are not allowed to consume alcohol untill your legal of age.
2. Blacks voting in southern states.
Nationalism.
1. Military draft.
2. War in Iraq. Soldiers keep getting shipped to Iraq to fight a war that is already over.
Nationalism:
1. The application of the Patriot Act is an example of extreme nationalism.
2. Anti Immigration Laws, the laws about hiring and employing illegal immigrants
Sectionalism:
1. The proposition of putting a wall up at the Texas Mexico border
2. The difference in driving age between states based on teen safety.
Sectionalism:
1. Age to do certain thing(drinking, smoking, being an adult)
2. Gas pricing(the prices changing and different in every state.)
3. Gay sex marriage(some state allow and others don't.)
Nationalism:
1. Election for president(the voting between Obama and McCain)
2. war(we go to war as a nation)
Nationalism: War in Iraq. Also the Election.
Sectionalism: Same sex marriages. Also illegal immigrants.
All of the examples are good except the war. I think that the war should never have been started. All of the others are good for the state and nation!
Sectionalism: Alaska trying to be breaking away from the U.S.A,
The votes of the south favoring McCain.
Nationalism: More security in airports, border patrol.
we are just trying to keep the country safe while alaska wants to break off O.o
Sectionalism:
1)driving age-most states are the same but some of them have different ages at which people can drive.
2)state laws in general-each state makes their own laws depending of whats best for that state.
Nationalism:
1)drinking age-for the better of the nation they are asking it to be 21.
2)Military Draft-the nation might call for a draft to help have our country be safe.
i think all of those are good because for sectionalism each state needs different laws because all of the states are different.
For nationalism they do that stuff to help keep the nation safe and together.
Nationalism: -U.S. at war
-After 9/11 national security and protecting borders became crucial.
Sectionalsim:-Drinking and driving laws changes in each state
-Same sex marriages
Not all of these are good. Like the war. But it is good that we started protecting our borders better. And for the sectionalism; the drinkiong and driving laws for each state are probably whats best for each one. I know that our DUI laws are good for our state because if you get caught, you'll never do it again because of how tough we are. And I don't know about the same sex mariages in California. I mean i don't know if thats a good or bad thing. Its good for the same sex couples i guess.
Nationalism:
-the war
-voting age
Sectionalism:
-drinking/smoking age
-gay sex marriages
I think the war was a bad idea in my opinion I am against it, but now there is not point really in backing out because that means all the hard work put into it would be wasted. I also think the voting age is a good idea along with drinking and smoking age. But I don’t the individual states have the right to decided if gay sex marriages should be legal
I don´t know if I got that right but I think a case of nationalism in the last years was when east-germany and west-germany moved together again... The definition of nationalism is: The belief, the national interest should be placed ahead of regional concerns or other countries. While building a new nation, germany neither cared about russia nor about the german states. Because the old states didn´t get that much money from the state for school supplies and stuff like that anymore, because they had to support the new states. This was a case of nationalism, because the government just cared about the complete nation and about the people...
Another case of nationalism is propably the iran. A long time they didn`t care about weapon laws of the UNO and just united the whole country wwith hate against israel. When you saw in the news interwiews of iranish people, they would always stand behind their country, no matter what happen. Even if they would start a war.
A case of Sectionalism is, for example the law of legal gambeling in the united states. It is up to the state if they legalisize gambeling in casinos or not. Another case would be the law of driving, which also depents on the states government and not on the countrys government...
Nationalism
1.Revolutionary War- The 13 colonies came together as a nation to fight for their independence from the British.
2.The drinking age- The whole country has the same drinking age.
Sectionalism
1.Civil War- The U.S. divided into the South and the North and fought against each other not as one nation.
2.Gay Marriage- The law is different in all states.
I think 9/11 is a big example of nationalism, the nationalism of the people, and how when we were attacked our pride for our country really came out. Now when all the people of the united states and soldiers were swelling with anger. The president used the nationalism of the country to his own advantage and pointed us all in a direction.
I don’t know if I am right about this one but I kind of look at this election as an example of sectionalism. I mean our government was being run completely differently than the way Obama is now purposing to lead us. We the Americans our the ones that rose up and changed it by voting for this president who is different than any other president before instead of following the governmental power we used our right to choose someone that is best for our country
Sectionalism: 1. segregation
2. Border control-
Nationalism: 1. draft
2. War on terror, or what ever they call it now
I think any of these elements could and are bad for our country, it seems all the ideas I had for either of these topics seems to be displeasing to someone.
Sectionalism - drinking age/smoking
gay sex marriage, photo radar
Photo radar I think should be taken away. It doesn't reduce people speeding. Drinking and smoking age should be the same age.
Nationalism- Draft
war in Iraq
Draft should never come back because our military is strong enough. The war in Iraq needs to end so the draft isn't a question in anyones heads.
Sectionalism:
1. Abortion
Depending on your views this could be either good or bad. techinically, people have the right to make their own decisions, but at the same time some people consider it murder.
2. Driving requirements
Some states require different things for students to get their license. whether it be their age, how many hours, or required classes. This can be a good thing because in states with heavier traffic and more violent kids they can crack down on them individually.
Nationalism
1.War in Iraq/9-11
after the attack the country went into a dont mess with us time again. and we cracked up on security and did what we thought was best for our country and tried to improve other countries to be like us.
2.Immigrations
our country has been tightening the reigns a bit on the immigrations too. Whether it be visas or the border control, they are doing things they feel are best for our country by trying to control how many non-citizens are here.
Sectionalism:
1. Age to do certain things such as drinking or smoking.
2. Gas pricing
3. Gay sex marriage
Nationalism:
1. Election for president
2. war
I think all these things are good except maybe war and stuff because, i don't really like violence. But other than that i pretty much go with them.
I agree with Rabecca Edgars about the whole not likeing war and stuff, and also about that some of the things are good for the state and nation.
Nationalism:
Voting age
Pearl Harbor
Sectionalism:
Drinking and smoking age.
Gas Prices
I think that the voting age should be to a younger age there are teenagers that watch electorial debates but arnt able to vote. So isnt really fair.
After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States immediately joined the WWII. The attack enraged U.S. citizens to the extent that Japanese-Americans were forcefully put into internment camps.
I think that the smoking age should be 16 because thats when you are able to drive and be out and free from parents. the drinking age should be 18 because thats when you are legal adult and can make your own decisions
Gas prices were ridiculus ! it would take $140 to fill my truck up during the summer. now its only 60 which is much better. i think gas prices need to stay down!
I was watching the news and found an example of each
In Massachusetts republicans do not want to drill off their coast for oil due to environmental problems (sectionalism) but want to drill in the south (nationalism).
Another is how religious institutions have an influence in local community but do not in a national setting
Examples of sectionalism include many of the new laws in Arizona, such as the increased number of speeding cameras along the highways.
Examples of nationalism include the drinking age, voting age, military aspects (age, benefits, sign up, etc).
Im not a fan of the sectional laws in Arizona, as i really dont think theyll help much, but as for the nationalism i think the ones i noted are reasonable.
Sectionalism:1. Slavery 2. Drinking age
Nationalism:1. Voting age 2. Draft
Sectionalism - Drinking Age
Speed Cameras
Nationalism - Draft
War
These examples are viable but I think the drinking age should nationally be reduced to 18. Also, if everyone speeds the cameras will have to take too many pictures which will cost the state too much. They also can't send a fine to EVERYONE in Phoenix. So speed away ladies and gentleman.
Sectionalism: Photo Radar Cameras
Driving age!! - personally i think the new driving age with the whole 18 years of age sucks for the kids who have to follow that. i feel so bad for them!
Nationalism: Election for president- obama vs mccain!
Drinking age! 21 or older all around!
Nationalism-1 the voting age, miranda rights and the draft
Sectionalism_1 Alaska independece, South invented cotten gin
I would rather sectionalism probibly because im a hick
Sectionalism: Vermont is the only state that allows gay marriage., people want to drill in Alaska but is it the government or state call?
Nationalism: The country as a whole voted Obama into office., The country as a whole is at war with Iraq.
Nationalism-
1.War in Iraq
2.Elections
Sectionalism-
1.Same sex marriages
2.smoking/drinking age
Sectionalism:
1. Gay/Lesbian rights
2. taxes being raised on really rich people (what Obama plans)
Nationalism:
1. the elections
2. US not really standing up against North Korea's communism
IS IT ALL GOOD OR BAD?
Sectionalism
pt 1- good in some peoples minds and bad in other peoples minds
pt 2- sort of bad because the really rich won't want to work as hard, but I'm sure it has good parts to it too.
Nationalism
pt 1- good because we (the people) wanted what is good for our nation
pt 2- BAD. I feel strongly about this because I don't see how we invaded the middle east but didn't stand up for Rwanda and now we're not standing up against these communist nations (esp North Korea) just like we didn't stand up against Hitler. Shame on whoever is in charge of this stuff.
Nationalism would be the United States coming together as a nation after 9/11 happened.
Sectionalism would be each individual state trying to make they're own rules. also Alaska trying to break away and become there own country. that would be sectionalism
