WIN, LOSE, OR DRAW?
After watching the Presidential Debates, what is your impression? Who won, lost, or was it a draw? What impressed you the most, what upset you? Below is the youtube site to watch the entire debate. DEBATE
I believe that it was moreso a tie. Both parties, and candidates of course claim victory, but who really was strikingly different? I say: neither. I could mention points dealing with the candidates, but would it really matter? Neither struck me as better than the other. It's not that they did not do well, or speak well, or anything. But just from the debate, I don't think there was an absolute victor. McCain's speaking was a little more "exciting" than normal, and Obama focused a little more on points that he would not normally go as in depth on. So yes, I believe it was a tie. I don't think either of them truly won, although McCain seemed a lot more relaxed.
I watched most of the debate and alot of things intrigued me. 1) That audience reacion meter CNN had on the bottom of the screen that took a nose dive when ever McCain's face showed up on screen. 2) I was listening to a political analist after the debate and he said more or less that "a debate needs to be won at the podium not the fact check later" while illogical it is also true. McCain sounded more forceful and seemed to throw out a plethora of "facts" about Obama that Obama Denied and based on that McCain seemed more forceful. For the educated Voter on either side of party lines, these debates usually reassure their decision. For the uneducated voter, it may be the only true speeches of issues they will hear and a pummeling of an opponet with BELIEVBLE facts that might get dismissed later can swing those uneducated votes to the more forceful side. I thought it was pretty even but i would LOVE to hear more evidence to back up BOTH of their claims. Cause all im hearing is alot of empty promises. Again.
I think that Obama won that debate. When McCain first started talking he looked really nervous and seemed kind of smug throughout the debate. Obama on the other hand looked calm and seemed to know exactly what he was talking about. McCain was also saying all of those "facts" about Obama and his spending policies and Obama kept saying they were lies. Was McCain lieing when he said those or what?
I think that Obama won that debate. When McCain first started talking he looked really nervous and seemed kind of smug throughout the debate. Obama on the other hand looked calm and seemed to know exactly what he was talking about. McCain was also saying all of those "facts" about Obama and his spending policies and Obama kept saying they were lies. Was McCain lieing when he said those or what?
This Presidential Debate disappointed me since both candidates rarely answered the questions posed. Instead, they spent the majority of their time pointing out the flaws of one another. Although Obama showed his nervousness by frequently studdering and saying, "Uhh," I believe he beat McCain in the debate. Obama impressed me with his respect for senator McCain; whereas McCain was acting like a 5 year-old. Not once in the debate do recall an instance where McCain made eye contact with Obama. McCain often interrupted him and lied in some of his remarks about Obama's spending policies...At least that's what Obama said.
In response to zach: I agree with you that Obama won and that McCain seemed gloomy throughout this whole debate. I think senator McCain knew that his statements regarding Obama's spending policies were untrue. He used them as a ploy to convince uneducated voters to vote for himself. However, I think it backfired since Obama made it evident that they were lies..proving to the public that McCain will stoop to such a level just to gain extra votes.
Yes, it completely backfired on McCain. That is that beauty of a debate in that you cannot just say something and someone automatically believes you because it was a commercial on tv. Two seconds after you finish your statement on the other candidates policies, they are coming back at you with them same. It throws people because well, I like this, but hold on... I like this too!! Although I still believe it a tie, Obama was "a lot" more professional in the way he handled things. And yes, he tried to make eye contact. But his choice of wording should have maybe been reconsidered before he said it. McCain, "Something something something Obama's policy"... Obama, "That's a lie". Both of you, wisen up and actually act like politicians. McCain should learn to be a little more professional without being critical, yes, but Obama sounds like I went up there and was denying McCain's accusations personally. (I'm not choosing sides) However, Obama I believe went to Columbia and then Harvard Law, correct? I'm sure that they taught him more intelligent things to say than "That's a lie". Profession-ality. New word?
Oh, and too: what upset me? When they both entered and shook hands, McCain I think barely glanced at Obama once. Versus Obama was looking at him nearly, if not, the full time. How stupid is that? Your running for president McCain, grow a backbone and be somewhat nice to your opponent for pete's sake. It's offensive as a human being to watch that. When you shake someone's hand, you make eye contact with them, not look at the freaking crowd. At least pretend to show respect and not walk out like a stick is up your (you know where).
I strongly think neither did their best because they were saying they both are right. What impress me the most was the things they were saying I some what agreed on. What upset me was that Obama kept agreeing what ever McClain say. Right now I think Nobody won.
This was one of the most important debates we'll see for a while. And yet it left me at a draw. I don't think anyone really won becuase i feel none really left enough powerful points or showed the opponent up enough. Both of them didn't really answer any of the questions being asked either! I was most impressed with all the talk about what they are going to do about the economy. however i left not knowing what they were going to do about it! It was sorta frustrating. Something that really upset me was when obama started accusing mccain about his involvement with some of the spending or whatever, the stuff with bush. and yet obama has been linked to the downfall of the economy. so its like calling the kettle black eh? I don't know. don't accuse someone unless your slate is clean. But overall this debate left me wishing it was more intense and not what i was expecting.
to jaime: i aggree with you on the empty promises thing. ha, if they made promises even. for me i didn't hear a lot of confidence that they were going to do anything concrete at all! lol
I watched that seemed to be leaning towards Obama, In my opinion he has his plans in order and wants to educate the young kids and help with the families that really need the help and they have been asking for, for many years. Help the common people not the rich.... don't make rich richer.
Agreed with Zach Obama has it stuff in order and is ready.
I agree with you on all your points i didnt feel that either man really steped it up and took control. We will hope that someone will win the one on thursday.
Personally i believe that the debate was a draw. If they even get any credit, i would say they both lost. Neither of them answered the questions that were given to them. They kept talking about things they are going to do or bashing on the opponent. Neither of the pair seemed to give any concrete answer for the questions. I was very dissapointed with the debate. It was almost painful to watch! McCain kept blinking and Obama kept saying "um". On top of that Obama called McCain by the wrong name and kept saying that McCain was right. To me, i dont think that is good for him.. So, i believe that it was a draw or whatever and that is was just a very poor debate.
i agree with you on a few points you made. How neither of them answered the questions given to them, they mostly just pointed out the flaws in eachother. I also agree with that McCain kind of didnt show as much respect towards Obama as Obama did towards McCain. At least Obama looked him in the eye every now and then.
I personally thought it was a draw. Neither of the canidates put there best foot forward. They both avoided answering questions and their quirks(blinking, hand gestures, and forgetting your opponents name)were so distracting from their argument. I did however appreciate McCain's ideas for no universal healthcare and keeping corporations n American soil to create jobs. Universal healthcare is such a bad idea. Sure it sounds good on paper but who will be paying for it-taxpayers-and also think about service. No competition means lower standards and because this is government funded people may not get certain things paid for because the government does not want to pay for that kind of expense.
Larissa!... I agree with your statement this debate did leave me or a loss. I will say that I also agree with the accusation aspect, but sadly that is politics for you. It's never I did this, its always you did that and for right now we as a country have to research our facts on our own until all the finger pointing can lessen a little.
At the risk of sounding redundant, I think it was a draw. Both candidates had both good and bad points, but I didn't like how even half an hour into the debate, Obama and McCain still had not answered the question; I have a short attention span, so making it straight forward would be great.
And in response to Cole's comment in class on Monday, you made a great observation about how much McCain blinks when speaking. Maybe it's just me, but it became a little distracting.
In response to Eric Kern: I also agree; Obama portrayed a great deal of respect, whereas McCain seemed a little too preoccupied. With himself.
And finally, Jaimie Eisner, you said a mouthful just with Sarah Palin!
During the debate I think both sides had there bright points. They are both pretty good at handling politics and avoiding the question. I think neither of them won. They both would say what they are going to do put never put any way how they plan to do so behind it. But also how they seemed to react in the debate would make an impression on me. During the debate it seemed like McCain would do whatever possible to put Obama down and attack him at his plans. But Obama seemed to addresses the people compared to McCain who never made eye connection with the camera to address the people of America. I think as an appearance factor Obama won but as an actual debate I would like to see more information stated and more truthful facts about the candidates. The next debate will be key for both to see if they can improve on what people said were wrong with both of there debate tactics.
I agree 100 percent with you Chelsea. It was kind of funny at first how McCain would blink so much it was kind of funny to count until it got a little painful. I also could stand the ums either, but other then their appearance they didn’t give any concrete info on there running for office, and I hope they do in the future.
The presidential debates were interesting, that was the first time I had ever watched it. The one thing that bothered me though was that neither McCain nor Obama answered the questions they were asked, they talk about it but never really gave an answer, maybe because they themselves don’t know what the answer is or something but that was a bit of a disappointment. I think the debate was a draw. Obama seemed more relaxed but used “mhmm uhh” a lot, he also agreed with whatever McCain said. McCain seemed nervous and he was always blinking and fidgeting around. Although none of them answered the questions they both made good points.
Your right this is one of the most important debates, and no one answered the questions, and it did leave you wondering what they were REALLY going to do with the economy. But to me I thought Obama showed more respect then McCain. McCain just seemed rude, he never really look at obama when he talked and Obama showed some respect and looked McCain in the eye when he answered questions and when he called him by the wrong name.
I did not think that either of the presidents won. It was a tie. I did like McCain saying he was going to eliminate wasteful spending. But right now I'm watching the debate between the possible vice presidents and I'm most definitely liking Palan. She knows what she is talking about and Bidden keeps saying things and Palan just shreds him up on it.And apparently Obama wants to make guns unlawful. This, of course, is unconstitutional, but how would we protect ourselves from people who break the law by still owning a gun?
In response to chelsea: I agree. I think they both clearly lost and didn't answer the questions. And yeah they pretty much just kept repeating the same thing over and over again about who spent how much on what.
While i was watching the debate I decided it was to be called a draw. They both brought up great points, but they also looked unprepared in ways. For example, Obama kept stuttering and McCain was blinking uncontrolably. I think it should be called a draw because they way they were speaking was a little bit too similar.
Another point i would like to bring up is answering the questions. A lot of the time the two would not even give an answer to the question asked. They would start to go off on another topic that linked to the question.
The debate made me a little irritated. Both McCain and Obama struggled to really answer any of the question. They both were just talking politics. I didn't hear to much about what they were going to do about the bail out plan. The decision made on the bail out plan is said to be unconstitutional. Why is out Government making decisions that does not follow our constitution? We won't go any further into that subject. Also in the debate I noticed McCain was very forceful on his ideas. He made lies about Obama making votes he did not make. Also another thing I noticed was Obama saying McCain is right a lot. This is a debate you have to be on the other side of the playing field than your opponent.
I will agree with most of the blogs that McCain was blinking a lot and Obama studdered a lot. If that is all you noticed on the debate you really need to listen to what words were coming out their mouths. I would have to agree with Jaime. He brought up some key points. Some things that both candidates could have done to make the debate better for themselves. Kudos to Jaime!
To be honest i think that obama took this debate very well. He spoke very well and it seemed that he knew what he was talking about. Mccain didnt seem like he was ready for it and was not focused very well at all.
This debate i believe left me at a draw. I say this because they didn't really anwser some of the questions that they where being asked. I wans't really able to make a choice on who to vote because they didn't really say or made stuff clear, well at least to me. They also did some stuff that looked bad such as McCain kept blinking and Obama kept saying ummm. And also Obama kept calling McCain by the wrong name and kept agreeing with McCain, by like saying that McCain was right and stuff. So in all i didn't really think neither of them did good in this debate.
Upon listening and watching the candidates, I found that neither were likable. McCain is quite stiff and Obama who has been such a great orator failed to deliver. They were very elusive on topics which may just be for political reasons (so that they don't upset people). But what is the point of a debate if you don't discuss specific points of your opinions and plans. I feel that overall McCain won. Less was expected of him in debating and yet he showed his comfort level with the questions and came from a more experienced viewpoint. I feel however for the competition that involves the leader of the free world neither inspired the kind of confidence I would have liked to see.
In addition, I agree with Mike's blog. I couldn't confidently call a winner between the two candidates.
I believe it was a draw, because both candidates didn't give clear, straight up answers, and they were both unbelievably boring. They didn't speak clearly and simply to the average citizen. There is something about them both that I just don't like. The vice presidential debate was way better. Honestly McCain kept blinking so much that I couldn't even bare to look at the screen and when I was looking at the screen Obama looked overly confident and he would keep interrupting McCain, and I like it when both candidates get heated up but don't interrupt each other.
I think Obama won the debate. Even thogh neither one of them made their point really clear, Obama looked more confident. McCain looked really nervous and didn't look confident in what he was saying. McCain kept accusing Obama of things and Obama kept denying it so it maid me wonder who was telling the truth. It maid me think McCain was lying because he looked uncomfortable up there. I think overall Obama took the debate.
I don't see why they don't give clear answers in politics. How is the debate supposed to be interesting if the candidates are not debating on what they clearly believe? How are the citizens even supposed to choose which candidate they like better if their not even sure where the candidates stand. The fact that they don't give their views straight up also makes me not like them even more.
In my opinion, both candidates won. With McCain, he wants to create more jobs and break our dependence on foreign oil. He also wants to give benefits to our veterans. With Obama, he wants to fix the healthcare industry and education system. What I didn't like was that McCainwants togive billion dollar tax breaks to oil companies.
In my oipinion i think that both of the senators Obama and McCain's speech was pretty good.I think that they both understand and notice the difficulties that we are going trough like the financial prizes and in my opinion they bith know the way that it can or is affecting the people around us. They both want to do something about it to make it better. I really liked the way that Obama was saying or more how he answered his questions but both of them did a really good job.
alondra rey....i agree with you about how like in some questions they were not as clear as i wanted them to be but i think they both did a really good kob....
I think Obama did really good in this debate. He seemed more like he knew what he was talking about and looked confident and calm. McCain looked very nervous and was looking down like the whole time he was speaking, whereas Obama was making eye contact. They both werent really answering the questions as I would have liked them too and were saying "um" alot. But overall I think Obama did better.
I agree with pretty much everything your saying! McCain blinked way too much.. I couldn't stand watching him. Also I did notice Obama interrupting him alot but I think he did a better job then McCain in this debate. And you said both the candidates were boring, but I think McCain was the boring one! I was definatley more interested in what Obama had to say!
In my opinion I believe McCain won the debate. In terms, McCain won the debate because Obama lost it. People had very high expectations for Obama and he seemed to slef destruct. During the debate he constantly said he agreed with McCain, he interrupted McCain, he said he simply backs his party's basic ideas, and allows himself to get into a situation where not all of what he was saying made sense. Both presidential hopefuls did negative things to help themselves on the podium, McCain just seemed to do less.
While McCain did look nervous so did Obama. And both canadites are guilty of bashing each other. Obama even went as far as to say the entire republican party didn't know what they are doing.
And most of the 'facts' McCain said about obama were probably things in bills Obama had to vote against since bills contain a very great amount of issues, and McCain was pointing out just one in the bill.
I have not watched any of the presidential debates because, honestly i have no desire to. so having that in consideration, i do not care who wins or who loses. i do not think that us as teenagers should care about the congress and such. we should be more worried about other things, such as school and the colleges that are trying to get us to go to. but this is of course just an opionion and everyone has one.
Thats a hard one to answer but id say it was a draw. They presented their issues basically well overall, but its hard to determine who won or lost. If you were judging on how many times McCain blinked or how many times Obama studdered i still wouldnt be able to judge who won or lost, but as far as the issues they were trying to cover, its definitely on the fence for me. They both said things i agreed with and disagreed with but im not completely for one or the other.
i really don't know who to believe. which ever one is chosen everyone is going to have something they find that they don't like about who ever it is they voted for.
i really don't agree with anyone. i mean i guess it could be a draw. but i honestly think no one will be happy with the person they vote president. I'm not political at all i don't really care. whatever happens, happens.
In response to Andrew s I somewhat agree with him. Even though i thought Obama won the debate he made a good point. Obama agreed with McCain a lot and that made him look bad. I think Obama kind of did lose the debate by agreeing with McCain a lot and saying umm. I think it colud have gone either way.
This debate left me at a draw. I don't think anyone really won becuase that neither of them were confident and new answers to questions. If they even get any credit, i would say they both lost. They kept talking about things they are going to do or bashing on the opponent. McCain kept blinking and Obama kept saying "um". Both of them didn't really answer any of the questions being asked either! overall this debate left me wishing it was more effective.
Definitely neither won. Obama stutters, McCain blinks too much. Both don't answer questions. I think the Democrats would have a better chance of winning if Biden was the pres candidate and not Obama. Biden is a better public speaker.
It is said to see that our future president cannot give straight answers. I think whichever side wins, won't be able to fix the U.S. up as quick as needed.
i think it was a tie because both of the candidates were alike. they agreed with eachother a lot.
the thing that really upset me was when they agreed with eachother because no one pays attention to the but part all they pay attention to is part where they agree with eachother no one wants a president that agrees with everybody.
McCain impressed me because he was a much better speaker then Obama was, Obama says "ummm" way to much it gets really annoying after a while.
Melissa The story that i tought was the craziest and funny was the story were the mom had her 9-year old daughter drive. I didnt even know that little girls on that age could drive and i was really surprised and schoked at the same time.

Hate to break it to everyone but, its Politics 101 to not answer the question given. dont expect anything more in later debates.
Not that im taking sides but after looking at it objectivly i cant go with a duo that says:
"Countries don't invade other countries in the 21st century" - McCain
AND
Sarah Palin........enough said!

In response to chelsea:
I agree.
In response to Jaime Eisner:
In response to frefec:
Both presidential hopefuls did negative things to help themselves on the podium, McCain just seemed to do less.
zach...
I think McCain won because he proposed many good thing that obama was opsed to and Obama seemed very defensive and went off topic alot mor than McCain
In response to Emily Morris:
I agree 100%. As interesting as it is, I've never taken much of an interest in politics.
And maybe it's just because I'm going with the flow of the "trend," but I have been more in tune lately with what's going on.
McCain impressed me because he was a much better speaker then Obama was, Obama says "ummm" way to much it gets really annoying after a while.
i agree with eric because they both really never stayed on topic, they never answered the questions.
Melissa
The story that i tought was the craziest and funny was the story were the mom had her 9-year old daughter drive. I didnt even know that little girls on that age could drive and i was really surprised and schoked at the same time.
