WHAT IS HATE TO YOU?
Give a brief definition of hate using your own understanding of the concept. What types of hate are there and what is the international world doing to stop hate? What can you do as an individual? After you are done read your classmates entries and write at least two responses to their entries.

Hate is an intense dislike of something for any number of reasons. A lot of times people hate someone because of an ideal they stand for and cant get past that and love the person anyway. There is more hate than love in the world and it can lead to situations like genocides and war. The international community does very little to stop hate, and that is because there is very little they can do. Hate is such a complicated issue and there is no way to solve it internationally. Hate must be stopped through personal relationships and understanding of people as individuals which is why it is difficult to deal with it internationally. Hate must be stopped individually through trying to understand people and looking past their differences to love them. Even though you may disagree with someone, you should be able to discuss an issue and both grow through addressing it. That is one approach I believe people should take to help stop hate.
To me, hate is not tolerating or accepting differences. Whether it's against a different race, sexual orientation, religion, moral belief/philosophy, or whatever the difference may be.
The different types of hate are the ones I listed above (race, sex, religion, etc). The world is trying to fight hate by speaking out about tolerance through organizations and individuals are always trying to fight it themselves by taking simple steps in their own communities. Must start somewhere!
I found this cool paper (http://www.scribd.com/doc/3771686/Ten-Ways-to-Fight-Hate) someone did about 10 ways to fight hate:
1. Act-- do something
2. Unite-- Organize a group of people to spread awareness & promote tolerance
3. Support the victims-- Let them know you care, get involved if you've heard about a hate crime and speak to authorities to stop it if you have to
4. Do your homework-- Research hate groups and their symbols and agendas. Organize an informed campaign against hate. Understand the difference between a hate crime and a bias incident
5. Create an alternative-- Don't get involved with a hate group or attend any of their events/rallies, but create your own anti-hate parade or rally and inform others
6. Speak up-- Expose the hate that's going on. Inform others!
7. Lobby leaders-- Elect community leaders to fight against hate and speak out about overcoming reluctance
8. Look long range-- Promote tolerance and address bias. EXPAND YOUR COMMUNITY'S COMFORT ZONES
9. Teach tolerance-- Bias is usually learned young and at home. Reach out to youth and organize activities/clubs that fight against prejudice
10. Dig deeper-- Find the stereotypes and prejudices within yourself and build your own competency and keep working to expose discrimination when it happens, whether it's in school, at work, or in public
My definition of hate is strongly disliking something that is different than you or "not normal" in your eyes. I also think there are 2 kinds of hate. There is hate where you just can't eat a type of food, which is alright, and then there is hate because of someones skin color or race, and that isn't ok. Although many hates such as racism and homophobia are becoming less and less dominant throughout society, there are still very radical groups that practice these things on a day to day basis.
The international world has done quite a few things for the fight against hate. From August 31 - September 7 the U.N. held a World Conference against racism and discrimination. They touched on many issues and enacted many National and International laws in numerous countries to erradicate
discrimination.
As an individual you can only do so much. I know i will not discriminate against people for their race, sexuality, or religion. If I don' show discrimination to others maybe more and more people will jump on the bandwagon.
Stop the hate!
Matt, while I agree that it "begins" at home, I truly think it is a global issue. We teach hate or at the very least judgment on Islamic people and the religion they practice. Should we not get together with the International community in order to educate and therefore eradicate this type of hate? Should we shy away from an topic complicated issues? So lets discuss!!!
Hate to me is people hating and disliking someone or something for being different from them and acting upon that hate. Most hate is often blind hate. This blind hatred often has to do with race, religion, gender, politics, and sexual orientation. Racism is characterized by racial prejudice or discrimination. Society formed a group called ADL and there trying to stop hate by forming non governmental organizations. People do a lot of protecting also. The UN made a day dedicated to fight racism and the violence that follows it.
Ashley, I am a fan of Tolerance.org as well as a financial supporter. The organization has done a terrific job on awareness programs. With awareness we must act.
Hate to me is disliking a person so strongly that they want to do physical, emotional, or verbal harm to someone. The different types of hate are blind hatred, racism, religious and politically hatred, and sexually-based hate. Blind hatred is being prejudice without be subconsciously aware. Racism is hating against a certain race. Religious is being prejudice towards a specific religion. And sexual orientation is based on a hate towards someone for their choice is a significant other. I feel the international community is trying to change hate through world organization. The ADL (Anti-Defamation League) is one of the organizations standing up to hate groups. They are encouraging nongovernmental organizations to monitor bias, racial, and profiling and discrimination. The UN has established a day marked to fight racism and the violence that follows. The UN says that many countries are down playing the amount of racism and hate crimes they have in their community. This is only leading to more problems and less policies to enforce these hate crimes.
Matt, though I agree with most of your statement I do think that there are steps to be taken on an international level. As i stated in my post there have been conferences in the U.N. to put an end to discrimination. Now I know that talking about racism and putting new laws doesn't solve the problem, but maybe it could help people that weren't aware of the atrocities become aware, and isn't that the first step?
Hate is the disapproval feeling or jealousy of any kind of race, religion, sexuality, political opinions, characteristics, style, or individuality in any person, place or thing. There is "blind hate" which is the feeling of hate and prejudice without any reasoning or information to back up the hate one feels. People are fighting hate all over by standing up when hate crimes are committed. There are rallies and protests going on all over the world trying to stop the hate crimes. Even at school, kids are mixing up their groups of friends trying to be more accepting of different people and groups. As an individual I can speak up when someone says something prejudice and get to know people who have different religious beliefs, different race and are just plain different from me in general.
I second what Zach said in response to Matt. I would add to it, but he pretty much took he words right out of my mouth.
Mrs. Burr, I agree that we should try to talk about issues like religion which is the point I was trying to make at the end of mine. However, I think that the decisions to stop hate are all personal and cant be legislated by a government or forced upon people.
To me hate is feelings of dislike, disapproving, or hostility toward someone or something. There are different kinds of hatred such as, race, religion, gender, politics or sexual orientation. Most of these are just people and prejudice ways, but those ways can lead into something dangerous. For example, the KKK or terrorism. There are organizations out there that are trying to find ways to help fight hate. Such as the ADL, who fight anti-Semitism, the ACLU, who fight to ensure that everyone has equal civil rights, and the SPLC. There are also protesters and even the small everyday people who make the slightest difference. "All over the country people are fighting hate, standing up to promote tolerance and inclusion".
I think hate is judging because of your own opinion. A small example is like bullying a bigger example is like the KKK. I think hate can be in any form big or small. Hate can be acts of violence against others because of color of skin or beliefs or any other opinionated reason. People are making speeches against Genocide, Schools are making programs to stop kids from committing hate crimes. Ways to stop hate is to stand up for people who are disliked or bullied, dont judge people without knowing who the are as a person.Everyone should try to get along and not make assumptions.
Zach, you said you can only do so much as an individual and then proceeded to say "I know i will not discriminate against people for their race, sexuality, or religion. If I don' show discrimination to others maybe more and more people will jump on the bandwagon.
Stop the hate!
Well if you ask me if everyone did what you suggested that is doing MUCH.
I really like what Matt had to say about hate. He did an awesome job at describing how each and everyone of us needs to stop hate on are own. I like how he said there is more hate than love in the world which is very true.
Hate to me is like when someone is rude to another person, when someone envy's another person, when someone is racist, or when someone doesn't like you because of your religion, when people call other people names, when people say mean things about another person with out even knowing them, also when people bully others, etc.
The types of hate that there are would be, racism, religious, politically-based, and Hatred based on sexual orientation. Congress adopted the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. A top priority of the Anti-Defamation League, this legislation would strengthen federal hate crimes laws by authorizing the Department of Justice to assist local authorities investigating and prosecuting certain bias-motivated crimes. The bill would also provide authority for the federal government to prosecute some bias-motivated crimes directed against individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. As a individual i think that i can help people out by, talking to them, or by just simply making a group to try to stop hate.
I believe that hate really is something that is uncontrollable. I also think that hate is something that one really can't describe. It's funny to me that hate is something that we can't even describe, but it is something that is so recognizable. Hate can be anything from being angry or even bitter towards somebody. Hate can be discriminating against someone because of their color, religion, weight, or any little thing that you don't like about a person. Hate can kill any sympathy you have towards a person. It can also kill the ability to feel empathy.. Isn't hate the very opposite of empathy?
I know I try my very hardest not to 'hate' someone. To not sit there and nit pick every little thing about someone. It's really hard, no doubt about it. Hate is something that we have grown up with. The news is something that is full of hate. We sit there and listen to who got killed, who killed someone. Almost any song that you listen to has words in it that is hating one someone or something else. So how can you just sit there and not have hate in your life?
I try so hard to actually get to know a person. I'm always going out of my way to be nice to a person. Because who are we to sit there and judge them? Like we are to know there life? It really doesn't hurt for you to just smile at someone you don't know, or even someone that you jumped to a conclusion about. Just a smile could make that persons day. Because you never know, maybe that person has never gotten the time of day.
I think that slowly but surely, the world is trying to stop the hate. On the UN website they have a whole Human Rights page. The UN started a Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 after WWII.. 2008 they celebrated the 60th Anniversary. I just think that it is really cool that the world is actually trying to prevent something like the Holocaust ever happening again.
Matt, I agree completely that the decisions are personal and it must be dealt with on an individual basis, but as Zach said, by the government getting involved (making laws, etc) it can spread awareness. People may have not realized how big of a problem that hatred was beforehand. But I do think it has to start at home and with personal relationships and obstacles.
Matt, There are people that do not want to stop intolerance, so shouldn't the international community step in to set up laws in order to monitor and enforce.
What Peyton said about people standing up and sticking up for people who are getting bullied is a great way to help stop hate. I think that would really help at school.
Matt, I didn't even think of something you said, "The international community does very little to stop hate, and that is because there is very little they can do. Hate is such a complicated issue and there is no way to solve it internationally." I agree completely. I think hate is way to complicated to solve completely and there really is not much we can do but the obvious, which is trying to stand up for what's morally right but sometimes it just doesn't work the way you wanted it to.
Morgan i really liked how you included so much information about different groups and i really liked your quote
I understand hate is not accepting someone or something. Seeing something as not right because it is different to you. There are many types of hate for race, religion, sexual orientation, and political views. The international world is producing Law enforcements and the Hate Crimes Prevention Act to stop the hate in communities. As an individual, learning to accept mankind and recognize we are all equal and no one is better than the other. It only takes one person to start a chain reaction of showing respect to those around us and not including hate into our everyday lives.
Ashley, though I think government being involved can help spread awareness of hate, do you think they are the most efficient venue to do so? Don't you think private organizations are much more effective and should take the lead?
Carly, so true about the news. Our media promotes hate in both obvious and round-about ways. Maybe if they showed more positive news people's attitudes might change.
I'd say the movies/tv shows are equally as guilty. Hallmark is about the only innocent and pleasant channel anymore. Even the children's channels can have quite a bit of violence...which can give kids ideas.
Carly, you start your comment be saying that hate is uncontrollable. I'm going to have to disagree on that one. I believe that hate is completely controllable. If i choose to not hang out with someone because of race, I am the cause and it can be controlled by me being tolerant and understanding. That is why i believe hate can be controlled.
Mrs. Burr, the international community should step in only when people are dying or their rights are violated. You cant pass a law to change what is in someones heart.
Hate is a strong, negative, expression geared towards people of different cultures, generations, religion, and sex. It may be used in both general conversation or a heated argument. Hate may be used as an action or just by reciting derogatory words. There are many different types of hate and include but are not limited to: Hate against political party participants, hate against gays and lesbians, the disabled, and different religions such as Catholicism or Judaism. These are problems occurring all over the world. Acts to protect faith and sexuality are starting to unveil and universities are setting up clubs to help advocate for the importance of diversity not only on campus, but in general.
As an individual, I can help stop hate numerous ways. If I witness someone being discriminated against, I can speak up and say something. I can help other organizations stop hate crimes by getting involved. Also spreading the word on to others to help get involved and stand up for others can help prevent further crimes from happening.
Kourtney, I totally agree, it really does only take one person to start a chain.
I agree with peyton that there is small and big hate. I also agree with standing up for others, and that others should get along.
Carly, Well said.
Alondra, I like how in your definition you talked about how hate can be someone's envy towards someone else. I feel like envy is a big reason for a lot of teenagers hate and then that trait follows them.
Matt, that's a tough one! Ha. You've got me thinking now. I can see where a private organization could be more affective (effective?). But by the government getting involved it at least shows we're trying to make an effort as a whole. Just depends on the individual and what medium appeals to them more...national or more private level.
No matter what, though, I don't think hate can ever be stopped completely. Even through private organizations AND government working together.
i like how matt said something about they do very little because there is very little they can do, that was an interesting thought and i agree. i also liked how ashley listed alot of good ways to help fight it. i'm a little confused as to kayla's definition of hate, and how people act upon hate. i think that people do act on hate but i dont think that you have to act to hate someone.
Ashley i like how you put 10 ways to stop hate. You were really descriptive about the kinds of hate.
Zach, I think that a person can control their hate towards somebody else. But I believe that as a society hate can't be controlled because there is way to much in the world. I believe that eventually it can and will, but it is going to be very tough...
Hate is an word use to show anger or dislike of an person, place or thing. Much like love can be blind hate can often be blind also. Blind hatred mostly has to deal with race, gender religion, and
Sexual orientation. What the international world is doing to stop hate is promoting tolerance and pushing people who commit hateful crimes. As an individual i believe that i can be more accepting person and i can also join a club at school that promotes tolerance.
carly i agree with you because i mean hate is uncontrollable, and its sometimes something we cant describe ,but we so now what it is and so know when and where hate is.
On the uncontrollability of hate, I think this is untrue. It is a way to get out of trouble "Oh I just could control myself"
Ashley L,
I like how you describe how you can change hate invidually
Ashley L, I agree with you about speaking up for the discriminated, it shows there are people out there who care about their feelings and believe negativity is not the way to express their opinion.
Brittany C, the idea to help tolerance through a club at school is a good way to spread more compassion. Students can learn to accept at an early age and help the bullied have a better experience growing up when it is most important.
Morgan I like what you said so far but what are some things that you could do to stop Hate?
Brittany I like that you are interested in joining a club to promote tolerance and becoming a more accepting person to stop hate!
Patriotism is the love and willingness to sacrifice for a country. It is being devoted to ones contry.
