PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENTS

"Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation." Oscar Wilde.

We have spent the last two days working on stations that had to do with the Progressive Movement 1880's-1920. The categories were:
Suffragette Movement
Prohibition
Lynching
Worker Rights and Labor Unions
Big Business and Robber Barons
"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair on Food and Safety Conditions
Child Labor Laws
Factory Safety (Triangle ShirtWaist Company)
1. What do you feel are the three most important issues during this Progressive Movement.
2. Why did you pick them?
3. If you joined a Progressive Movement in 2012, what three issues would you take on and why?

I think the most important issues are the food and safety conditions, suffragette movement, and lynching.
I picked them because food is something everyone eats and its important that it's handled well. Women needed the right to vote, and it gave them a voice. And lynching damaged a lot of families and hurt many people and it needed to stop.
Three issued I would participate in is the internet censorship, occupy wall street, and gay rights because they are important to me.

1. Child Labor Laws, Prohibition, Factory Safety

2. I picked these three because children should be taken care of, drinking should be limited so the family is not left alone with no money, and to protect the workers.

3. Gay Right movement, Immigration Laws, and Health care system.

1. it wood have to be lynching , worker rights and labor.

2. I picked them because they were getting treated bad and they were getting hand for no reason. Or they were working hard and were not getting paid good. The labor as bad because they were getting kid and telling them to work in bad.

prohibition robber barons and factory safety because those are the most important umm idk

I think 3 of the main issues are junk food, more time for exercising, and lots more time to do some work.

1. I feel that the most important issues during the Progressive Movement were the Worker rights/ Labor unions, Laws Factory Safety, and Child Labor.
2. These three were the most important in my eyes, because it how America was building. Having people working at factories effect our economy, and their working conditions mattered. The danger of child labor as well the adult workers could change how a business functioned; which in turn would effect America's economy.
3. One that I would take on is Child Labor because children, if they have to work, shouldn't be in hard working conditions. Another I would support is the Rights of the Workers because they should have a say in the work place. Last I would support the Lynching because that hurt the American public and families.

I feel the most important issue was racism and the effects of it have rippled forward into our current time. We will not stop hearing of it for quiet a time to come but it is a step and we are going somewhere in the right direction.

I'd say that the most important issues at the time were:
-"Worker Rights and Labor Unions"
-"Suffragette Movement"
-"Child Labor Laws"

I chose these three because they were started during the progressive movement, but we are dealing with them now too.

In the last days a movement against the bills SOPA and PIPA started on the internet. It's dealing against the censorship of the internet, that would be, in my opinion, a violation of the first amendment.
The second issue I would pick is the economic crisis and the #occupywallstreet movement that changed the way of thinking of the country.
The last issue, but not less important, in my opinion would be a movement for abortion and gun control, that could totally improve the life situations in America

1.) Prohibition, Lynching, and the Suffragette movement

2.) Prohibition caused more problems than it ever solved. Lynching was murder not justice. And the suffrage movement was to have equality for ALL people. not just men.

3.) Well definately not the Occupy movement, I honestly dont know of any others in 2012 as of yet. though i know there will be some coming up.

1. I think the three most important progressive moments of those times are...
- Suffragette movement
-Prohibition
-Lynching

2. Suffragette movement was for women rights which really needed improvement back then.
Prohibition was outlawing liquor and honestly I think that that wasn't really working since people still drank and its good that its now gone.
Lynching was killing people without a judge or jury but just sentencing people to death whenever you thought they deserved it. That was completely wrong so it's good its gone now
3. To change the rights of gay Americans to something more reasonable, like marriage and tax deduction like every married couple.

Anonymous said...

The three most important issues of this time were Child Labor Laws, Lynching, Food and Safety Conditions. Those were more important because of the dangers of working in factories to men women and children and the many deaths of innocent people. I would take on the Gay Right Movement, Immigration Laws, and Occupy Wallstreet because they are important to the well being of America

i think the most important issues are lynching, suffrage and safety conditions.i picked them becse food is a big problem, women deserve right to vpte and lynching killed alot of people for it to be right!

I think the most important things are the lynching he kids working soo young and the womens suffrage. I think it is terrible how the treated women like they didn't matter when the are helping work. The kids are far too young to be working in such dangerous factories. It's sad that even though slavery had been done for a long time that white people were still hanging blacks. I would help stop child labor with nike, the occupy wall street and they gay rights because i think all of these issues have need to be solved because they are all in the wrong.

The three most important topics were child labor unions, because no kid should have to work and deal with dangerous equipment, shirt waist, because it's horrible how no one told the girls on the tenth floor about the fire below, and lynching, because it was a horrible way to die and some should have never been lynched. The three I would back today are immigration laws, health care, and occupying wall street.

Anonymous said...

1. I think the most important Progressive movements were Women's Suffrage, labor conditions, and lynching.
2. I think these were all important because they were all about giving everyone equal rights under the law, and protecting peoples' rights as humans.
3. The biggest issues of today would be Gay Rights, Immigration, and our foreign policy.

I think the three most important issues during the Progressive Movement were the Child Labor Laws, the Suffragette Movement, and Factory Safety. I picked the Child Labor Laws because the children were way to young to be working in such dangerous conditions and that needed to be fixed. I picked the Suffragette Movement because women needed to be treated as equals to men. The Factory Safety at the Triangle Shirt Waist Company was also important because the factory wasn't allowing breaks. They also were working 14 hours a day, six days a week. If I joined a Progressive Movement today I would take on the Gay Rights Movement, the internet censorship, and Occupy Wall Street because all three need to be fixed.

1. Working Sanitation, child labor laws, lynching
2. Working sanitation helped improve sanitation which would help make food more clean and bacteria free. Child labor laws helped keep kids out of dangerous jobs which would protect the children. Lynching help save the lives of possible innocent people.
3. occupy wall street, child labor in China, gay rights. These all are trying to improve the lives of children in China gays and the American public.

lynching, child labor, the probation.

I think these are the most important ones, since lynching created a debate aswell as child labor did. And the probation showed that people can take a stand and another group of people that is against it can create a debate and later win.

1) The 3 most important issues were suffragette, Lynching, and factory safety.
2) Everyone should be created equal and have the same rights no matter what their gender or skin color is. Lynching is a cruel and unusual punishment which is against the constitution. 141 people died in the fire because their employers failed to secure their lives because they weren't important they could be replaced.
3)Eliminating the death penalty. It is pointless to someone because they killed someone. Isn't that saying they person doing the execution should be killed too. A 15 year old could be up for the death penalty. Who ever has the mind set to sink that low has some serious issues.

Anonymous said...

1. Women's voting rights, Child labor, and Factories.
2. Women were not equal and they fought so hard to get their rights. Child labor was unfair because they worked long hours in poor living conditions. Factories were very unsafe and treated workers poorly
3.I think just americas debt and the spending our government does is a huge issue and it leads america downhill. Once americas out of debt it would let us focus more on other issues.

Anonymous said...

i picked food and safety conditions, lynching, child labor laws. i picked the because food and saftey should be a very big deal in the world. lynching is very bad nobody should take right in that. children should bw protected and not be treated so badly.

Anonymous said...

1. I believe the most important movement was Lynching, working rights, and women's rights.

2. Without these movements we would still have children working in factories, women with no rights, and people not fully being punished for their crimes.

3. I would take on immigration laws, gay rights, and Wallstreet because they are very important issues in today's world

Anonymous said...

i believe the most important are the drinking one, factory safety, and lynching
i picked these three because drinking is bad, safety is very important in factories, and lynching is just Bad..
immigration laws, health care system, and wall street,

1. "lynching in america"
"woman anit-sufferage"
"pchild labor"
2. i picked the first one because i'm an african american and i don't find racism good at all. i don't feel like just because the color of our skin is different dones't give you the right to beat me, or boss me around.
The second one i picked was woman anit-sufferage. since i'm a girl, i believe that girls are just as equal as boys are! if we set our minds to it we can do just as much as guys can!
And finally the third one i picked was child labor. i picked child labor because i feel like sending little kids to do an adult job is horrible. they obviously can't do as much as their elders can.

3. i would pick all the ones i listed above, and for the reasons i also listed above.

I think the most important were the suffragette movement, lynching and child labor laws. they're important because the suffragette movement gave EVERYONE the right to vote. not just men. Lynching was just murdering people for no reason and child labor laws gave everyone the chance to get an education.

I would be involved in the border security problem because its something that affects my everyday life. I seriously disagree with censoring the internet because as an American I should have the right to go on whatever website I please and the education problems. The way the schools are affect me everyday and without a good school system, this country will never get better.

Anonymous said...

I think the most important ones are the racial issues, bad working habits, and womens rights. I think people should not be treated differently just because they are not a white male. If I joined one today I would go with the SOPA/ PIPA issues. They really shouldn't be "censoring" the internet like this. I can understand wanting piracy gone but they are going too far. Another one would be border patrol. I understand wanting to go to a new country that might be better but with all of these people coming over its becoming a worse country. The last one would be how schools are losing money. Our education is becoming bad. Some schools don't even have money for books. There really should be more money put into the educational system.

The child labor lynching and saftey conditions really spoke to me because all of these three things were a big issue. Keep troops in the east kobe not being mvp and fight against hunger is what i choose.

Anonymous said...

1) Workplaces being horrible, labor movements, prohibition.
2) I picked these three because they deal with alot of what we do today. We all work at places and most adults drink.
3) Pay because minimal wage is low, Work hours for kids in school, and homework amounts for kids with jobs

1. I believe the labor laws, factory laws and "the jungle," were the most important topics.

2. They had the harshest impacts on society.

3. I would focus on the unemployment issues, immigration and fast food industries. The way unemployment has effected the economy is outstanding. It has sent us spiraling downward as a world power. If our economic procedures and unemployment issues are reprimanded then we will lose our position as a world power. Also, fast food may taste good and be an easy source of food for some people, but it is causing a decline in our nations health. The obesity level has sky rocketed due to the fast food industries. Not to mention, they are extremely disgusting and use alternative forms of food to increase production for a lesser cost to them. Finally, immigration has impacted not only our economy but our society. Immigrants have taken jobs from U.S. citizens and taken money from the U.S. Also, they effect the way people act in society.

Anonymous said...

1)a."the jungle"
b.prohibition
c.child labor
2)they are all extremely important to me due to the fact that they all were very harmful issues. The old, spoiled meat could have very easily gotten many people ill and have fatal consequences just as the prohibition at did. It spared many alcoholics life as well as their abused families. The child labor really did not sit well with me because i know how children act and they are not liable workers. I would make an act to end the law preventing gay marriage.

1. I think the most important issues were child labor, working conditions, and lynching.

2. I chose these because they seem to be the ones that directly affect people the most and they caused the most immediate harm.

3. Right now I'm not really sure. I tend to stay neutral on most issues because I can see the points of both sides in most cases. Maybe censorship of the internet.

Anonymous said...

I think the 3 most important issues i think were lynchings worker rights and child labor.I picked these issues because they seem like the most important and not as silly as some of the others like prohibition. If i joined a movement in 2012 i would probably choose an economy, immigration or that internet censorship law their trying to pass.

I think the most important movements were women's rights/suffrage,the food and safety conditions, and lynching. I feel these are most important because they all changed society and every day life. Women gained the right to vote and they could start to get careers, the food factories changed the way food was prepared and they started to take more precautions with the food. The lynching was dangerous and put anyone at risk. I am not sure what movement I would join.

CARSEN!!!
I think the three main problems in this project/assignment would have to be wome's rights, lynching mobs, and hildren working in factories. These are very important because if we didnt hvae these happen back in time I guarantee things would be way differnt right now. Women wouldnt be voting, children would be working in factories with very very bad working condition, and even working conditions would be different in many diferent ways.

I chose them because these are the core structures to this assignment, in my opinion.

1. to me the three most important ones were labor unions, because big industries do not have a any right to treat workers/people like animals with diseased working conditions and low pay; Prohibition was important because if those laws had never been started our society wouldve be driven down the drain and probably passed out in alleys somewhere; womens rights were important because we are human beings and no matter our sex we should all be equal. 2. I would take on our money issues with everyone being broke and the poor becoming more broke. I would take on the fact that the rich need to be taxed more and the workers should get at least 7.80 for minimum wage, even though it just went up

Emma said...

The three most important issue during the progressive movement are 1. lynching 2. womens rights 3. children working in factorys. The reason I chose these is because I believe that they all were so effective on everyone and that without these issues, we would not be the people we are now. Lynching was a terrible thing and now that blacks and whites are created equal, we do not have to worry about that. Also, people have become more understanding that whites are not the only kinds of people out there so they do not feel the need to hurt them anymore. Although there are always execptions to certain things. Womens rights was a huge impact on everyone and without it, girls would not be able to speak their voices and state their opinions. As for the children working in factories if this did not happen, then working conditions would be so different then they are now and children would be still working as if they were adults.
If I joined a progressive movement, the three issues i would chose to take on would be the internet censoring, gay rights movement and the current DUI situation. I would pick these because i have strong feelings on all of them, and I would try my hardest to take these on in my own way and speak my voice about each.

The three most important issues of the Progressive Movement are Women's Suffrage, Lynching, and child labor laws. Of course, I chose child labor laws and women's suffrage because if I were living in that time, those two issues would effect me the most. I also picked Lynching because I feel anyone and everyone that were accused of anything, then lynched for it, were never given fair trials was a horrible thing. People in those days were so uncivilized it was scary.

1) I feel like the three most important issues are:
A) Child Labor Laws
B) Factory Safety
and
C) Prohibition
2) I picked them because:
A) Children were often working harder than they should which resulted in injury and sometimes even death.
B) The Shirt Waist Company had a HUGE fire and because they didn't have the proper safety methods in place, they lost many workers
C) It was very overly dramatized that liquor would kill you after just one drink because one drink ALWAYS led to more and more but what about when someone really does only have one drink?
3) A) Internet Sensoring
B) Gay rights
C) Gas expense

1. the 3 that are the most important to me is lynching, child labor laws and factory safety.
2. The reason i picked these were becuase they were the ones that got to me the me the most. Lynching was wrong and didn't get stopped tell there was 260 or more people dead. 160 of them where blacks. Child labor laws because it was wrong and inhuman to have a kids working at the age they were and in such bad conditions. Factory safety because they should have had factory safety if they had kids that were between 3 and 6 working in there.
3. I would take on child labor laws sense they are gong on in the economy still. it can put a lot of harm on those kids and shouldn't be happing. Texting and driving, people cause accidnet by doing this and a lot of people are killed from this. Drunk driving becuase if you are drunk then you shouldn't be driving. Also if you know you are going to get drunk then you shoul have a ride set for you so you arent driving home at all.

I believe that the biggest problems are money, jobs, and S.O.P.A. Money is a big issue in this time because of the economy. People are trying to get by with taxes and bills. Jobs there is not that many jobs available anymore. Many people are voting no on the S.O.P.A bill because they are wanting to charge and block certain websites.

2. I think these were all important because they were all about giving everyone equal rights under the law, and protecting peoples' rights as humans.

For me, the most important issues that i learned about in the Progressive Movement Era in the 1880's~1920's
were the child labor, because i am the eldest of 7, and so anything dealing with the abuse of children really touches my heart and i dont like hearing about children being forced to work when they should be enjoying the small things in life. women suffrage, because i am a woman rights activist, and prohibition of alcohol because i wonder what it would be like to make other things legal, then illegal, then legal again..
3 issues i would take on now would be to support gay rights in every state because i am part of the LGBTQ community, internet censorship, because i think that the internet is an amazing way to express yourself and learn more and an amazing source, and also anything else that i think would be good.

Child labor laws, Factory conditions and lynching.
I picked these three because children should not have to work because they need to have fun. The factory conditions were absolutely horrible and obviously needed to change. Lynching was a punishment that i find unexceptible and scary

i think the most important movements are child labor, suffragette movement and worker rights. I picked them because these movements made a huge difference in American society. I would take on the same issues because they have changed our world but are not at thepotential i believe they could be at.

suffrage movement, labor safety, and lynching.

A country that was built on the principles of absolute equality among all. I find it fair to assume we should allow women a part of the freedoms American citizens enjoy. why should a women be considered an exception because they are female. are they not human?>>. Labor fairness should have been something amended long ago. Sometimes, when we shoot for large profit or benefit we hurt many along the way. I dont think thats fair to the people being used for the betterment of the few and priveledged. and lynching.... can humanity actually learn to accept members of THEIR OWN RACE? Are they not human as well? absolute unacceptable. America, a nation of freedom built on the back of human slaves.

Anonymous said...

1. I feel that the most important issues during the Progressive Movement are Child Labor, Factory Safety, and the Worker Rights.
2.These three were most important because back in the days you had to ave factories and people or kids to work in them.

Anonymous said...

1. I feel that the three most important issues during the Progressive Movement were "The Jungle" on Sinclair on food and safety conditions, lynching, and the Suffragette Movement.

2. I picked food safety and conditions because people were continually getting sick off of bad meat, and it is disgusting to think that these unhealthy conditions were happening to products eaten daily. Lynching was also an important issue because it was an act of discrimination and was completely unfair. Many people's lives were affected by the outcome of lynching, making it an important topic. I chose the Suffragette movement also because women deserve the same rights as men do, and this movement was one of the first times that women were standing up for themselves.

3. If I joined a Progressive Movement in 2012 I would choose gay marriage, factory farming (the mass production of food products using inhumane methods), and the gun laws. I would choose to support gay marriage because everyone deserves to be treated as equals no matter what. I would choose to go against factory farming because it is treating animals inhumanely, ruining the environment, and is causing unhealthy meat products that we consume. Lastly, I would protest against people being allowed to carry guns in public places and the selling of firearms to anyone. This is because guns, if used incorrectly, are a danger to society and can lead to catastrophes like the shooting in Tucson.

1.I think the most important issues are child labor, lynching and factory safety.

2.Child labor wasnt a big deal back then but now no kid should be put to work beside chores. People shouldnt ever be lynched because if we lynch somebody it just makes us animals. Factory safety is always good so we dont have another incident like triangle fire.

3.Racism is the biggest issue throughout time people have always been racist and that will never change due to the laws we have and rights that allow us to do what we want freely and without getting in trouble.

Anonymous said...

1. Women suffrage, Child labor laws & Lynching
2. I picked women suffrage rights because just because we are women and may not be capable of doing all the things men can do, does not mean we shouldn't be equal to them. We should have the chance to prove that we are able to do a lot of the same things and we have just as much knowledge as men. We are no different and we should have been treated the same as men.
I chose child labor laws because children should not have been working in eat the age they were and they should have at least been in a more safe environment. The close they wore were not suitable to where they working and that alone put them in a lot of danger. No kid under the age of 16 should have to be put to work.
I also picked lynching because of the racism that was involved with it. I strongly disagree with the way colored people were treated based on their color. There was no other reason as to why they got lynched. It makes no sense to me as to why people could so easily kill someone with no reason at all, just from the color of their skin. It should have never happened and it disgusts me to hear about how many people were killed just from the color of their skin.
3.
A) Gay rights,
B) SOPA/PIPA,
C) Cost of gas.

A) I would try to change gay rights because love is love and everyone should have the chance to get married to the person they love no matter what the gender is.
B) I would change SOPA/PIPA because as humans we should have the right to go on the internet and search whatever we want. I don;t see what the big deal is about having internet? It's wrong for these people to try and take it away from us. Nothing should be censored.
C) The last thing i would choose to change is the gas price because it is overly expensive and most people can't even afford it now, but it's only going to continue to rise. It shouldn't be to the point where people have to ride the bus or ride a bike to work simply because Americans can't afford gas. It's ridiculous.

1. I think the most important issues are suffragette movement, prohibition and worker rights.
2. I picked those because they are also current today, because there are womens in who don't have rights for example because of their husban, there are some workers who need to work a long time for a few dollars and there is also a lot of violent because of prohibition in the world.
3. Gay rights, immigration and children labor.

2.I picked them because personal respect is really important and those three are all about personal right.
3.I think three important issues are gay rights, immigration laws and occuping wall street.

I picked Suffragette Movement, because women and men are both human and they should get the same right, then Worker Right and Labor union, because without laboru unions, the workers would get their rights, because no one would tell them, that something is wrong. And last but not least, Food and safety conditions, because you have to have food, good food, to survive and without any safety conditions, life would be even more dangerous.
For sure the gayrights, that is a big issue. You can kind of compare it with the suffragette back then, gay peoples are different, but still human and you can not choise, if you are homosexual or not.
There are a lot of peoples, not just in America but everywhere in the world, which aren't having a job right now and that is a big issue. If the number of peoples, that are unemployed keeps going down, the government has to raise taxes of richer peoples, which is not fair.
I can't come up with another one, 2012 is not that long yet... ;)

1.the 3 big problems are kids working in factory's, unsafe shop areas, the document where there were a lot of farmers with guns protesting

2. i picked these because they all have to do with safety violations

3. i would take on the same type of issues, ones that have to do with safety ie: auto shop safety conditions ,construction, hunting

The three most import issues were the Suffragette Movement, Child Labor and the Food conditions. First off, woman are just as good as men are and they deserve equal rights. The child labor laws put little kids in danger. Yes, they learned to work at a young age but the risk of getting seriously injured was not worth it. Lastly, the Food laws are something that applies to everyone. It is important that our food is not spoiled because everyone has to eat.

The three issues that I would take on are gay marriage, immigration laws and wall street because all of these issues effect me.

1.) I think the 3 most important issues were, suffrage, working rights, and child labor. 2.) Because won=men deserve their rights more then men do, and working rights are super important because if you work you need to have equal rights cause you work for them. I wouldwork with these problems in other countries because some still have these issues.
