WAR OF THE WORLDS OCTOBER 30, 1938
WAR OF THE WORLDS.
Some listeners heard only a portion of the broadcast, and in the atmosphere of tension and anxiety leading to World War II, took it to be a news broadcast. Newspapers reported that panic ensued, people fleeing the area, others thinking they could smell poison gas or could see flashes of lightning in the distance.
It was also reported that people fled to the streets, contemplated suicide and mass hysteria ensued.
1. After listening to the broadcast, why do you feel people reacted the way they did?
2. What would create this type of hysteria today?
Would it still be fear of aliens? Why or why not?
3. Does the media have a responsibility to the people to not create massive fear. If so, what about 2012? There are movies, "documentaries", and other media out there instilling fear of this date.

1. People freaked out because for all they knew Earth was under attack by an advanced alien race killing everyone near it.
2. Aliens could create this type of fear, if people believed we were under attack. Or something like biological terrorism could freak people out.
3. The media should avoid creating to much fear out of something. When it is obvious it is fiction its ok, but creating a lot of fear of something false is not alright as people will needlessly freak out.
Radio was the only source of news in the time period that this came on the radio, so anyone tuning in midway through the show would belive it was real, because there was nothing to say there wasn't. They couldn't turn to a different station or turn on the tv to verify it.
I'm not really sure the media could cause that kind of hysteria again, because now we have more radio stations and we have tv news channels that we can check. The only way a show could do this is if they all work together.
But I guess if they mislabeled a horror movie as a documentary, or if they told us it was real, it could cause mass panic.
I believe the media does have a responsibility to keep panic like that from happening. Because of this show, many people committed suicide, fled their homes, or were killed in the mass panic.

1. Due to the wonderful imager provided and the dedication to the broadcast anyone would be convinced. testimony from a professor, A Military General etc. during the time of fear of WW2 I suppose everyone would already be pretty excitable. 2. Right now it would most likely be some sort of new disease outbreak like a mass swine-flu or something like that.3. I always believe the saying, Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.
Mainly because they would believe what they heard and that was the way it was. Strangely enough it is almost believable and that is why everyone freaked out the way they did. I think few people would have fear of aliens, i believe anything to do with whatever is supposed to happen in 2012 would make people react like this. I think they know what kind of trouble they'd be in, it would be worse then it was back in 1938. People know now that that would not be funny, it would be judged to a certain belief and idoooubt that kind of thing would happen.
Because the broadcast made it seem like it was actually happening and they only said it was a story at the very beginning. The movie 2012 could possibly create the same kind of hysteria today if you believe it to be true. I don't think that the media should have a responsibility to warn everyone if they are doing something that could create a massive fear but I think that the media makes their money by scaring people and getting reactions from them in a bad or a good way. 2012 could possibly scare everyone if they said that it was true.
Back then they thought aliens were real and when they heard this how were they supposed to know it wasn't real? Today a lot of people are worried about 2012, wondering if the world will end. If they heard something like this they probably would freak. The media has no right to create massive fer among the people because they have no idea what's going to happen in 2012. Maybe the world will end maybe not. All we can do is wait and see what happens.
1.they reacted the way they did is because the story is very detailed and sounds like aliens are really attack us. also there wasnt any commercials or something saying it was fake only at the beggining.
2. the only thing that i could think of is 2012 but that is so far fetched that whoever believes that needs help. and if a radio broadcast now a days without any commercials would talk about a terrorist attacking us people would believe it.
3. no the media does not have to put fear into us. but they do, so people buy there newspapers or watch there shows to get good ratings. the media is ridiculous now a days.
The people reacted the way they did because they believed that aliens were really invading and killing humans. Im not sure that we would have this type of hysteria break out today because there would be no video footage. It would be harder to fake an event like this. The media should not create fear like they did but should not be limited to what they say. They should know what is right and what is wrong.
People probably reacted that way because they were fearful for their lives and it's not like they can see whats going on. Today people fear 2012 and they turn to religon and fear of political powers and the anti-christ. I think personally that the media can do what they want because people should have some intelligence to realize it's not real.
I think because the radio only announced that it wasn't true at the start of the broadcast. Anything that as to do with nuclear bombs. Yes there would because there are still people that have lived in the time were threats were high. Yes because they need to let people know that all of this is not real and this would not happen. I don't think people would be worry about 2012.
i think that the poeple in the 30's thought that there were realy alien because it was a time were they actualy trusted there goverment. and the radio was sayin that the goverment was fighting them. i would kill my self because eveyone else was doing it.
1) People reacted the way they did because to their knowledge the world as they knew was being attack by 'Martians' when it was truly only a story which was being told.
2) Something that would cause hysteria is terrorism, or something of the like. It could also be the fear of aliens, but most likely not because humans know that we are alone in this universe, and anything that wanted to 'contact' us probably would've already attempted to do so.
3) The media does have a responsibility to not create the hysteria which this has caused. 2012 is a date at which the world is to 'end,' but just like with the others days, it won't do anything, if it does, then it does, but who knows by what.
1. With people already anticipating a war and worried about when or where it would begin, this broadcast created panic among the already scared people. People were affaid for their families
2. All the talk about 2012 is already creating fear with some people. The movie coming out is probably not going to help any either. Another thing that would creat panic is if another broadcast similar to this one came out, many people would think it was another terrorist attack.
3. I believe that the media may say whatever they want, but they also have to be responsible for the outcome. The 2012 "documentary" will be an interesting thing to see how people will react.
I feel they reacted the way that they did because it sounded so real at the time to them.
I think what would create this type of hysteria today would be terrorism against america or natural disasters.
Yes because people think their is still life on mars and we are still researching on it today.
Yes I think they do, but they don't put fear on us (the media) we feel it ourselves they can't feel it for us.
test
I believe they felt that way because the broadcast was all a hoax. The type of hysteria that would create this today would be MILITARY TESTING! Okay, heres the deal, I do not believe that aliens are real. Its a joke.
1.)well i think that why people thought that the broadcast was real was because if they can in half way into the broadcast that they would feel that is was real, and do to that fact that they have made it so real with the acting and the sound effects.
2.) I would say another terriost attack would cause the hystrial today. Or any movie or book or conspericey showing legit facts on why the world would end.
3.) Yeah because they did it with the the new Flu going around and the only resaon why they made a big deal about it is cause we didnt have a vacsen but more people have died from the normal flu then the swine flu yet.
I would have been so scared if I would have listen to part of that. Everything sounded so real and he gave such good descriptions like if he was actually there. It could be the whole alien things but the whole thing that everyone is talking about today is 2012. I think they do have the responsibility to say not to panic that everything might be okay.
1. I think they reacted the in the way they did because it sounded real with every thing they said. Along with giving really good details.
2.An attack on the US again or if they said we only had one week to live.
3.Yes they do but people are going to belive what they want just like not that many people think 2012 is real they think it will not happen.
1.I believe people reacted the way they did, because they were unaware of the difference in the radio broadcast and the play.
2. i believe the for casted end of the world would cause a type of hysteria that occured during the war of the worlds Broadcast. I think that an alien attack on the radio would have a "boy who cried wolf" affect because the playing of the war of the worlds brodcast.
3. Yes I believe they do, the plays of 2012 I believe will just be plays on emotions.
They were afraid of mars and did not know anything about it. Also that you don't have any prof of what is being said. So that had to asume that what is being said is true. A nuclear war, no, there is a low chance of alians near our planet anywhere in our universe. Its the media job just to inform us of events. People have been talking about 2012 for years. This radio transmition came up without warning, there was no preparing. They are not instilling fear, they are more of useing it for attention of people to make money. It just doesn't concern people as much unless its imediate and without warning.
1)radio was the only source of news they ha so of course they were going to believe everything they'd hear.
2)i dont think they could create this fear...
3)the people from the radio are responsible for creating so much fear.
I think the people acted the way they did because they were all scared. They thought the broad cast was real, and not just entertainment. I think that what happened back then is comparable to saying that iraq is coming to get us or came to arizona. I think there still would be afraid of aliens because people are always afraid of the unknown. No, the medias job is basically to thrive off of half true gossip and try to scare us with it. Other wise there would be no such things as scary movies.
1. People reacted the way they did because the 'news broadcast' sounded so real.
2. I think anything that has to do with terrorism would cause people to act like this today. I don't think aliens would be as believable today as in 1938.
3. Yes, the media has a strong influence over people, and many people will believe whatever they hear or see. I'm sure many more people are believing the things about 2012 because of what the media has produced.
I could see why people were freaking out about this, it seems some what reaisticl? and i dont understand why they would play it on the radio in the first place, dont they no people only listen it some of it and not for a whole broadcast.
i would say another terrorist attack would cause hysteria today. Or any announcement concerning that the world is going to end some time soon.
i think 2012 is BULL, but they do have too many movies and stuff concerning it. it makes people believe myths, so i hold them completely responsible .
The peoples reactions were scared and the people freaked out because they didn't know that it was a play and they thought it was real. If the news and radio teamed together and said there was aliens most people would believe them but it wouldn't go for that long because our technology today has improved scenes the 1930's. They would be scared and people would freak out and maybe kill them selfs. People say that the world will stop and people will die in the year 2012. Their is info about 2012 and they say where going to die. It could be true because of the facts and science.
-Ryan Price
I think they freaked out because back then they only had radio and every thing on the radio was either news or music. So they thought that it was real.
Sense radio was to them as tv is to us and we saw something on the news about aliens attacking most people would freak out because they believe everything on news is true.
I think news media has a responsibility not to create fear, but movies and stuff I think people should understand that movies are fake and made on a set.
I think people reacted the way they did because they didnt know exactly what was happening, all they knew was that the men the radio were making it seem like we were under attack by aliens. I think that something with global warming might be able to cause some similar hysteria in todays world. I think that the hysteria that would be caused by aliens would be alot less than it was back then because of movies and video games and all the modern technology we have today.
No i dont believe that the media has the responsibility to not create fear i think that in todays world the media actully causes more fear than t prevents.i
1. well people were still extremely terrified from world war ll, so i think the way they react was understandable and i would have been scared too.
2. well it kind of already happened, with the swine flu, after the first death everyone started freaking out when it wasn't really necessary.
3. to an extent yes, but the media is just all about earning money, that's all they want. and i think it's fine if they want to make movies about 2012 people are going to believe things regardless of what movies come out.
1.People reacted that way because we did not know near what we know now with space and astrology, and only hearing a certain portion of the broadcast people belaved it.
2.2012 mostly because the myan calender ends in 2012 and the world is supposed to end people will freak out just like Y2K. It is something that will happen for as long as the world is in exisitance; there will be a Y3K
3.no the media can report what they want to as long as it is true if something happens in the world i would want to know even if it does spark anarchy.
People Believed that the play was real, it seemed real! The people in the play were blamed for stuff that happened. They thought it was an Alien. Movies that could convince people things are real! For example "Paranormal Activity", people believed that the movie was real! The media and peoples imagination is the main target for all the fear and the hysteria. Everyone takes part in the world staying calm and being scared, it will soon matter..
1. Because they couldn't really see what was happening have it sounded like they were really under attack.
2.I think people today would be scared of other countries attacking us, and I don't think people are really afraid of aliens any more.
3.The media makes it seem 10 time worse then it really is, like 2012 could just be a rumor trying to get us all scared because the world was sosposed to end like 2 times already.
1. Because they were afraid.
2. A terrorist attack. Yes i think that most people still are undecided on whether there really are aliens and i think if a new broadcast went on that said they were attacking and people didn't know it was fake everyone would act in the same way.
3. i think that sometimes its necessary for people to know the whole truth and if that terrify's them than so be it. But i have nothing against the movies coming out about 2012. they are fake. fiction. made up. its not real and people should be able to handle that.
1. People freaked out because they know that in an emergency, their programs will be interupted to tell them whats going on. So they believe it is true.
2. The only thing that could scare us, is the world ending or aliens. Because we don't know what aliens want, and we don't want to die.
3. Yeah they should not create this fear but people like it. You know that fear farm will be scary, but you still go. Because you like the adrenalin rush. It's what we crave. So the media gives us what we want. But the media shouldn't give us false statements like on the news they say a plane will crash on Shadow. But it doesn't happen. It's annoying
1 it sounded so realistic that they actually thought it was real.
2 terrorist threats or another 2012 movie. no because we have accepted that some and most believe liens dont exist
3 no the media does not have the responsobility to creat massive fear or hysteria. 2012 is just a calander ending how many times have we heard the world is gonna end on on set date but it was wrong the world will end when it ends no matter what it will end when we wont know it
1. Clearly people freaked out because all they know was that aliens were attacking. People were being charred alive by a "heat ray" and things were coming out of the ground and alien looking things are killing people. They had no clue it was all just a play.
2. So many things could do this to people. Especially if "aliens" were attacking us and people actually believed it. Your mind can do some freaky things to you. It can make you see things that aren't actually there. I mean anything "life threatening" can make people go into mass hysteria.
3. Media has somewhat of a responsibility to this. They promote and make it seem so real but than again people should know better to believe EVERYTHING the media says. It is freaky to think that the world may end in 2012 but who knows really. So of course people are going to fear the unknown, everyone does.
1.to me i think most people acted like they did because they didnt know what was going on and they didnt have a visual so they couldnt see if it was fake or not.
2. i think if the president came on to the T.V. and gave a speech on how the U.S is going to be hit by a meteo the size of half the country then people would freak out beyond imagination and everyone would go insane.
3.i think the media does have responsibility to do this because then you would have some people thinking oh im gonna die so why wait, but i also think that we need to know that if it is going to happen then we need to know what to do.
1.People back then reacted like this because they were tricked really good. The broadcasters were great actors.
2. Aliens woulnt create something like this anymore but nuclear attacks could.
3. It is not the medias fault people get scared so easily. People should take their time before reacting so crazy.
1. People were scared, because it was commonly believed that the radio provided only truth, and many people had missed the beginning, where Orson Wells said that it was all a story.
2. It would be terrorists or nuclear devices that would instill this fear, not aliens. Ever since 9/11, the American people have feared potential terrorist attacks, and nuclear attacks from rival nations. Imagine if Fox started claiming that North Korea had launched nukes at us...
3. The media has a responsibility to inform the public with the TRUTH,in a manner that won't cause panic. Because there is little to no way of validating the media's claims within a short amount of time, they must be held responsible for what they broadcast.
2012 is a load of crap. If I were you, I'd bet every cent in your name that the world won't be destroyed. If you lose the bet, you don't really lose anything. Win the bet, you make a few bucks.
And why are people freaking out over a calendar made by a race of people that lived THOUSANDS of years ago?
1. People starting freaking out because they can only hear what is going on, so they just assume that everything is real.
2. It still could be caused by fear of a alien attack, because that is still a scary thing to encounter. But it can also be caused by many other things, like nuclear bombs or any sort of an attack.
3. The media should have a responsibility to not create mass hysteria, but sometimes they can't keep things from the public.
1. I think people reacted the way they did because they were scared and some people didn't know that the radio show was fake because it sounded so realistic. The radio station should have repeated throughout the show that it was fake.
2. I think it still would be aliens because we haven't proven that aliens aren't real so it could happen still today. Everyone has there own beliefs on 'life on other planets' so who knows what could really happen in the world today.
3. I think the media has a huge impact on what we are scared of. Of course they make movies for entertainment purposes but some of our beliefs could really happen and have happened so I think it is wrong of the media to make movies and things about them. About the whole 2012 theory, people already have their thoughts on that and the movies and documentaries people are making, just make it worse. It scares people even more. When people make movies about these things, it is almost as if they are making fun of the whole idea about the beliefs of 2012 or other things.
1. All that these people knew was that the war had just ended and now there is an official sounding newscast on their normal news show.
2. I don't think there is anything the media could do to create this type of hysteria. There is so many ways to get the info. People would want to watch it again on YouTube and then obviously see the entire story. Plus they would have to create the video of it happening too.
3. 2012 is a weird guess. There is a calendar that ended on that date and for all we know, the guy who was carving the calendar just got bored and stopped. The media just wants to get more money from us and that date is a good story to do it with.
1)people reacted differently probably because they could only hear portions of the show and it was stating that it was a news broadcast.
2) a news broadcast saying things like we have been nuked or something like that but nothing else really or maybe something like the world is blowing up from the inside out.
3)i think that it is unintentional fear its more of a warning because they are following popular belief so thy report on it. personally i think 2012 is bulldookie and not worth my time because why worry about when you're gonna die its wht you're gonna do till then. also im a strong christian and the bible says the date of the apocolypse is unknown and cant be predicted. so i think its a cool movie concept but nothing more.
I thin the people reacted the way they did because they believed everything they were saying and weren't sure what was going on.
I think what would cause that hysteria is if some says something about a terrorist attack or something like that.
I don't think there would be fear of aliens because the technology we have now would help us know if there is any or not.
Yes they have that responsibility because they show things that most of the time aren't real and people start believing them and they start inventing rumors.
I think that the move 2012 is false because the bible says that no one knows when the world will end.. the only one who knows is God. and with those movies people are getting scared for no reason.
becouse the were scared abd did not know what to do.it would stihave that ll be fear of aliens and anything that scared them or was new to man kind.well in a way no they do nothave that as the media if there were true facts and like the president of the united states said it then the media is intitled to informing us the truth
Many were scared and confused because the broadcast was very descriptive, and was meant to be 'fear instilling'. The problem was that if you did not know that it was just a reading, and you had already possessed the worry that most did at the time of a nuclear war or invasion, it would seem logical why they would believe it.
A current day scenario that would instill the same fear and ensue such chaos would be something like another terrorist attack, or more threats from other countries.
The media does have a certain amount of responsibility for keeping the peace in this regard. For such chaos to break out and have so many react in a destructive way once, we should learn from this and it should not be taken lightly. Fictitious books and movies shouldn't be stopped from being made, but it should be clear, (which obviously it would be much clearer now then it was then), that it is fiction.
1. i think alot of what contributed too this fear is the use of real names and real people that are familiar so people thought it was real versus if they used fake names and such, its a scary situation and if people were to not know that this was fake and listen in halfway through the would be terrified
2. i think multiple things would scare us, the fact that aliens are invading the fear of death, painful death, worrying about family members and friends, but i think people wouldnt believe it untill they see actual live footage or proof
3. i dont think they should, the movies are a good but bad idea , people are going to be scared either way, there just boosting it, im kind of 50/50 and cant decide if its good or bad :(
1. The people reacted the way they did because they didn't know any better all they knew was there Planet was under attack.
2. Terrorism would freak people out because of what already happened with 9/11
3. Yes in a way because they could tell us stuff to calm us down about fearing about 2012. The media likes to tell the people fearful stuff in my opinion such as the movie of 2012 and the documentary.
1. i think people reacted like that because nothing like this has ever hapened before. if they missed the begining of the brodcast then they wouldnt have a clue that it wasnt real.
2. i think if this same thing hapened today on the telivision then the same thing would happen. if i saw a news person telling me that alians were takeing over the world periodicaly threwout a show i was waching i would freek out.
3. i think the media does have a responsibility to not instill fear in people. i think there job is to take fear out of people in a situation like this. i think that 2012 is a joke. i dont think anything is going to happen but i dont think the media should scare people into doing stupid things beacause the mians got tired and stoped carving the caleder into a rock on dec. 20, 2012!
They made the broadcast sound so real, and in my opinion people reacted like that because they were scared. Movies (or media, basically) and signs of UFOs and other signs. Some people are afraid of aliens. People believe aliens exist too. The media has a freedom to express whatever they want. It's like the freedom of speech. Under some circumstances, there are exceptions. The media can say what they want, but be responsible for the outcome.
1.People reacted in fright because the started to listen to the broadcast at the wrong time ad believed that it was actually happening.
2. I don't think that aliens would make this type of hysteria I think that nuclear war would create this type of hysteria, because it would Kill the entire population of earth.
3. I don't think that anybody should worry about 2012, Because there have been so many other dates that were supposed to end the world like 6/6/06, 2000, fall of 1994 was supposed to be Armageddon and the world is still here.
People reacted the way they did because the broadcast seemed so real. It was like the movie Cloverfield, it seemed realistic but we knew it wasn't because it was a movie.
War of the Worlds was on a broadcast that a lot of people didn't even know about. Anything as insane as this could cause mass hysteria, like terrorist attacks. People probably wouldn't believe aliens but if I saw the capital building explode by terrorists on tv like in Live Free Die Hard, I would freak out.
I personally don't think the world will end on 2012 but we still should be prepared for it. The world can end any day, it could end right now but nobody will know till it actually does. We gotta live life to the fullest because if the Earth happens to end in some crazy apacolyptic way, a lot of people will regret things because there is no avoiding the end.
I feel that the people listening to the broadcast took it as an end to the world. People contemplating suicide and fleeing the country. It was mass hysteria, but understandably it was a terrifying thing listening to the show when they had no idea that it was fake. Today I believe that the year 2012 will cause a massive breakdown of our society as a whole. The fear of the unknown takes control of our minds and eventually picks at us until we create our own demise.
They did not know that it was fake. Aliens could play a big roll in mass hysteria today, but nuclear war is a more reasonable. The media should have responsibility to not create mass fear. Although it is the media and they do not care what they put out there as long as they are making
money.
1) The reason why people reacted the way they did because the radio was the only news source they had other than the newspaper which was only up in the morning. Basically most people believed everything what the radio would say. Due to the fact that "Aliens" were in the country and the amazing descriptions of how newscaster Carl Phillips described them people went out of their minds and doing many gruesome things to themselves which are unethical.
2) In today's modern era the hysteria would be the fact of nuclear warfare. With missiles maybe being seen in the sky and parts of countries being bombed many people would do the same things that happened during the broadcasting of the play "War of the Worlds"
3) 2012 is a joke, What happened to Y2K, 06/06/06, Astrodamus' vision?
The 2012 movie(s) will just be a fictional movie of how they think what will happen. None of the producers can go by fact because nobody knows if its true or not. The only opinions they can go by are the ancient Aztec calender. Nobody will fear about anything after these movies are released.
1. because they were scared and if they didnt hear the beginning of it they wouldnt know for sure that it was just a play because the radio was the only source of news back then
2. media would still create this kind of hear but they would have to make it really good because because we have more stations. i dont think it would be aliens that much, more like terrorist attack
3. the media does have the responsibility to not create this kind of fear, but about 2012 i think most people dont take these kind of things as seriously as they did back then. i think as people we need to think carefully abut the things we hear.......
1.) The main source of current news in that time was the radio, and that's what people trusted. There wasn't really the type of thing that prints completely bogus new stories that everyone knows is fake. So if someone were to tune it and hear this broadcast, they wouldn't even really consider if it was fake.
2.) I think people could still be extremely frightened by the thought of an alien attack, because people will always be afraid of the unknown. The feeling of being attacked and having no control of the situation will always instill fear into people. Another thing that would create this type of hysteria would be some sort of terrorist attack, because it involves the same sort of emotions; being invaded by something unknown and uncontrollable.
3.) I think since the media has such a major affect on peoples' everyday life, it does have the responsibility to be truthful and not cause this sort of thing. When movies and tabloids come out, it is sort of assumed that it is fake. But things like that still cause fear; and fear about the 'what if'.
1. People were panicking because they thought they were under attack. Since radio was the only form of news back then, they started to believe the things they were hearing about monsters, aliens and lasers.
2. I do not think that the media could cause this type of hysteria again. In today's world we have many connections to multiple news sources that we can check anytime we want, so we are able to get our facts right away. And I doubt that we would be afraid of an alien invasion, it would be more likely to have a fear of massive illness or terrorism from other countries.
3. The media does have the responsibility to not create massive fear. Movies like 2012 are just "documentaries" they are not true.

1.)People reacted this way because they were frightened and thought the world was going to end due to the meteor and the alien that came out of it.
2.)I think a disease or some new type of flu would cause this type of hysteria. I really don't think it will have anything to do with aliens. I honestly don't believe that aliens exist.
3.)The media has freedom of speech, but what ever they say is not always true. Yes they have the responsibility to not let people create this massive fear. Also the responsibility of the outcome. People end up committing suicide or go insane. The world just gets buck wild, and it's hard to get all that false information fixed. The world is not going to end in 2012. I'm going to die with great great grandchildren, thats what i believe.
The people reacted to the fake news broadcast on October 30th, 1938 with mass hysteria as well as fear. I believe they did so because they didn't pay attention to the fact that it was only a play. However, I don't think it was only their fault. The news broadcasters had a duty to the people to remind them of what they were listening to. In all honesty, the news broadcasters brought the hysteria on themselves.
Today, in the 21st century, if there was such a broadcast I don't believe the reaction to be the same due to all of the special affect capabilities. Even if something like that really happened, Im sure that some if not most of the viewers would be extremely skeptical. If I am not mistaken, even during the September 11th attack there were people that didn't think what they saw and heard was real. Since then, however, especially with the war going on and the potential war with Asia, if they spoke of buildings being bombed, planes crashing, planes being hijacked, or nuclear threats, I am pretty sure people would go completely crazy.
The media may be able to write whatever they want, but they do have a responsibility to tell the truth and report only fact. However, if they do something as a joke, they should have to make sure that people know exactly what they are doing, and that it isn't real. The movies and things that are coming out are not going against that because it is obviously just a movie. If people don't realize that and react negatively to it, that is their choice and their mistake.
1. i think they reacted the way they did because they didnt know what was really going on and they believed it was a legit newscast and they couldnt visually see what was going on like we can today with television.
2. today i do not believe that major hysteria could occur unless it was a actual attack like it was on september 11th. even then we have internet and television to have conformation.
3. i believe that the media makes the incidents worse than it is and therefore people get all worked up. because we have so much trust in the media we rely on them too much in my opinion for our information.
1.I think they react like that because they never heard something like that before. 2.I think the same think. Yes I think people still fear the aliens.hitbualm8
They reacted because they couldn't tell the difference between a real broadcast and just a story. They didn't have the luxury we did with picture tv and commercials in between. They did what they thought was necessary to avoid attack.
Aliens not so much because we've created so many movies & t.v. shows about them that we've basically become immune to the thought. I think the kind of news that could bring about this terror is a disease pandemic. We are in the middle of one right now (Swine Flu), and many people are freaking out over it. With the drama of the bird flu, and then nothing happening we kind of put it on the back burner. Then the Swine Flu hit and mass panic ensued, too much too fast. Now, we are still on alert, but not as much because it's worn off but it will come back and people won't be prepared.
They have a responsiblility to an extent, but if the media is clear on the fictional purpose, then anyone taking it seriously is viewed as idiotic.
1) They freaked out so much because of all the calamities that the news reporters were saying! I'd be scared but I wouldn't be contemplating suicide. But then again I haven't ever been in that situation so I may act differently.
2)I think alien attacks are still feared today but not as much as before. There are so many people that research this stuff so I guess people understand it more. Terrorism is something that would be frightening now-a-days.
3)Yes and no. The media can display what they want but it does have an impact on people. We are SO gullible these days so we'll believe anything we hear. But then again, we do have a choice wheter to believe or not...but we most likely will and I think that's why they media is still producing such things, because they KNOW it will sell and be believed.
