Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Your first amendment rights, collectively is considered to be the most important out of all 27 amendments. Your mission on this blog is threefold. (three parts) One, decide which of the five freedoms you think is the most important and why. Two, which of the freedoms would you be willing to give up and why?(be careful). And finally, which freedom do you feel should be added

i think the most important one is the freedom of speech because without that you couldnt make an opinion about someone/something. The one i would get ride of is none of them because with out one of the laws there are so many things people could get arrested for. All the first amendments are linked together in someway. I honestly don't know what i would add to it. I think its better off if nothing is added to it.

i think that the freedom of speech is the most important one, its the most important one because it is the one that you could get in trouble the most for i think. Id be willing to give up the freedom of press because i dont care about the media and two it is just whole big distraction from the important things in life. Id like to add the freedom to believe as you wish, pretty much meaning that you can say you hate the president or something like that.

I think the freedom of speech is the most important because we use speech a whole lot. We use it in writing, reading, and talking. i probably give up religion because in the past and now people have been killed because of their religion, if we all had one religion then there would be less killings. I think the freedom of having a longer curfew.

Freedom of petition this is most important in my opinion is because without this we would have no voice in our country or we would but it wouldn't mean anything. 2. Religion. Having multiple religions is too troublesome because one will always be at war such as war with jews and muslims. Without muslims then technically would there have been a reason behind the mohammad bombing of those horses due to a OFFENSIVE! image of the muslim prophet and technically 6 million jew wouldn't have died. Freedom of Being AWESOME and doing what you feel is right as long as it dosen't hurt anyone

I think freedom of religion is the most important because their are many different religions and if we didn't have this freedom people wouldn't be able to express themselves. I would be willing to give up the freedom peacable assembly because I wouldn't want things to get chaotic. The freedom that should be added is freedom of grafitti or free art.

I think that the freedom of speech is the most important part of the first amendment because americans deserve the right to say what they believe. I don't think any should be removed because they all kind of go together but if I had to pick one I would pick the freedom of press. I think it is perfect the way it is and I cant think of anything to add to it.

Brad Parker said...

I prefer freedom of speech. Because it lets you talk about what you want to. I would talk about how the government works. I would give up freedom of religion. Because if anything I wouldn't mind what my religion was. I don't really go to church, but I wouldn't mind. Which freedom I would I is freedom to do what you want when you want.

I Think that Speech and religion is the most important to me because we all should all be able to have our religion. not everyone will be religious and no one can make someone become religious. we all have a say on what we want and what we want to become. freedom of speech is another important one because if we did not have that then we could not say what we want or what feel. you cant make someone not say what they feel is right or wrong. with out it we could not give our thoughts or opinions to people and adding something to it would not do anything i think its good the way it is and i would not kick one off because they all mean something and also combine some sort of connection with each other.

1. I think the most important is freedom of religion because I'm a christian, and lots of people aren't therefore it would make it extremely hard to worship God then.
2. I would give up freedom of press because I feel that the press shouldn't be able to write whatever they want because too many people are influenced from the press/media.

3. I don't think anything should be added because our founding fathers did a great job going down to the core and thinking of ALL the true rights that we should have.

1.)freedom of speech (obivee!!!) is the most important because everyone like to speak the mind and i wouldnt make sence going to jail for not having this right cause i'd be there all the time.

2.) I would give up freedom of assembly because i dont really remember the last time i used it i'm pretty sure that i havent done it.

3.) freedom of image in the way that art and shirts well not be looked down on and will be talerated.

I think that the ones that I would like to keep would be the freedom of speech, petition and religion. But if you give up press and freedom of peaceable assembly. You wouldn't be able to have people join your party because they are going to say that they is going to end up causing trouble. So I don't think we would have a fair chance with the government and millions of people would be in jail right now because we wouldn't have the freedom of speech.

In my opinion the most important freedom is the freedom of speech. Without it alot of people would get in trouble for voicing their opinions. The least important, the one I would get rid of, is the freedom to peaceably assemble. As long as you can still petition your government, assembly is not necesicary. I would add the freedom to a quality education

Chelsea Gazia said...

My favorite freedom and one I could never give up is speech. I have a huge mouth and it would be awful to not be able to say what's on my mind. The freedom I could give up would be petition, because I'm not really one to go against people I'm more of a peace maker. Plus I believe religion, speech, press, and freedom of peaceable assembly are the more important things you can't give up. I believe in God, I talk, and I love writing which is why I couldn't give up my first 4 of the 1st Amendment. The 6th protected 1st amendment freedom should be privacy. I believe everyone should be able to keep things private, people are nosy and get into everything and it would stop drama from happening.

Unknown said...

1. In my opinion the freedom of speech is the most important of the 5 freedoms. Being a person who talks a lot, and likes to speak her mind, i feel the freedom of speech is vital. Being able to speak freely without fear of being killed or harshly punished by the government is fantastic!

2. The only freedom i would be willing to take away would be the freedom to petition. Freedom of petition allows you to speak YOUR mind and give YOUR opinion on something, you shouldnt need others to sigh a piece of paper to validate that your opinion is right. If it is, or if you support it strongly enough, people will just naturally follow your lead.

3. I think that everyone deserves to have a quality education. It should not matter what you make or where you live. Everyone, no matter if you live in an older rundown neighborhood or a ritzy gated community, children from both areas should be given the same, GOOD QUALITY education.

The most important right for me in the first amendment is the freedom of religion. Without religious freedom I would not be able to practice my religion.
If I had to give up one I would give up the freedom to petition my government. The other ones are more important to me than writing my government.
A freedom that should be added is I cant think of any that should be added.

Kaitlin Sikkema said...

1. Freedom of speech is the most important amendment to me because I can't imagine living without this amendment more than the others. This amendment ties in with all of the other four of the first.

2. If I absolutely had to give up one of my freedoms from the first amendment, I would give up freedom of petition. This doesn't affect me now as I am still so young and have no desire to petition the government, but I'm sure it would bother me not having it in the future.

3. I think the first amendment is perfect just the way it is and doesn't need anything else added. They did an excellent job of putting together freedoms that could make everyone happy.

Zayne Wright said...

I believe the most important freedom is a toss up between freedom of religion and freedom of speech. I think its very important that we have the right to say whatever we want, but it's also very important rto choose our religion, or if we have the or not. I would not be willing to give up any of the freedoms, because their all really important. I think we should add is the right to marry who we want, despite genders and races.

mgriess said...

I think that freedom on speech is the most important because everyone wants to express there opinion, and a lot of people would wind up in jail by just talking.
ITS AN EVERYDAY THING!

i could live without petition the government, because no matter what i say, its not going to change the government. But first off, if i have the freedom of speech then i can say whatever i want about the government in the first place! eveything revolves around the freedom of speech.

if i were to add one it would be the freedom of image, because people are bias against people who look, or dress different, but in the end were all people. we are all equal. there should never be judgemental people.
(i got this idea from ryan and valerie. lawlz)

1. I think that the freedom of speech is the most important one because without it you would not be able to express yourself openly. If you can not openly express yourself than you have been stripped of your will to be independent.
2. I believe I would give up the right to peaceably just because I do not find myself regularly attempting to protest openly in public among a large group. I know that in the long run this might change because of my age and the times we are heading into, but I feel if I was stripped of any of my other rights i would be robbed.
3. I think that if I could add something I would open the right to ownership. I would do this because property is a strength to me.

Lotux L said...

To me the most important freedom that we have is the Freedom of Speech, because without that we couldn't 'speak' out against the 'normality' of civilization.

The freedom that I think I'd be willing to give up is the Right to Petition, seeing as how I don't petition anything against anyone so I see no use in it.

A right that should be included is the right to a recognized same gender marriage.

Probably freedom of press because then they would get in trouble for saying something about government and they could only say true fact.
I think that the first amendment is probably as good as it can be, but I am sure there are people who have one they think should be added.

I freedom that i would want to add would be nothing because our four fathers did such a great job planning it all i casnt think of anything.

I think we can lose religion out of the 5 amendments, because religion is important but the other for are more important. The amendment i would add would be the right to have food, because their are lots of people out there that don't have money for food so there should be a right for people that don't have food, so they should get a certain amount of food given away.

I believe the most important amendment is freedom of speech. With out freedom of speech you would have to watch every thing you say all the time. If i HAD to give up one then I would give up the freedom of press. Press is an easy way to spread gossip. And i believe that if you have something that important to say then why not say it, no need to write in. Writing is a passive way to solve problems. I think that the we have just the right amount of freedoms. Any other freedom would just be to easy to manipulate.

The most important I think is the first, the freedom of speech. Because that the only thing we do all day is speak, if that isn't protected we will have to watch what we say all the time. Also that we would get a less of a say too what the government does to us. I would not give up any freedom, cause that i would always have all of my bases cover when i go into the real world. The freedom to choose cause that then no one will be able to chose for you again, that you control what you want too pick.

1. i think the most important thing about the 1st ammendment is the freedom of speech because it's is very important to be able to say what ever you want. 2. the one i think we can get rid of is the right to peacably assemble cause it's pointless to do all that stuff cause most people dont even listen to you 3. I would definitely not add anything to the 1st ammendment because all these are fine and if i thought of something to add, it would probably come out to be bad in some way.

James B said...

I think the freedom of speech is the most important because if you didn't have that you wouldn't be able to share your opinion. If one of them were to be removed I would like it to be freedom of press because I don't really care of the press. I think I wouldn't want to add anything because those 5 cover about everything.

MarcieR said...

I believe that the most important freedom is the freedom of speech. Because it's really important to say basically anything you feel and not get in touble for it. Saying your opinion about something/someone is really important. I don't think I would get rid of any of them. I want everyone to have freedom of speech, and religion, and press, even the right to peacably assemble and to petition. They are all good. I wouldn't get rid of anything. If I could add any freedom, I wouldn't. There is nothing that makes me unfree in the ammendments. Not one thing, so why would I add something, if it's already good enough for everyone else.

Landin Hutchison said...

In my opinion, the most important right we have is the right to religion. I myself am not religious in any way, shape, or form, but the freedom of religion is really important because if you take religion away from the people, then our Country would be hated so much. Since almost everyone in this country follows a religion, they need the right to have it or this wouldn't be a free Country. One right i could live without is the right to press. I don't need other opinions to decide mine, but it is important because the news would probably be 10 times as boring. I think the rights we have now are perfect and there isn't much I would add to them.

Demi S said...

In my opinion, I believe freedom of religion and speech to be the most important. I believe that through everything those are the two things that have kept our country going, and they are things that many other countries lack.
On the contrary, I feel that the freedom of press has been taken advantage of and has been manipulated into a money crazed industry. Where I see its importance, I find it hard to see it as necessary in the way it has become.
I feel that as of right now the laws have been effective and although some alterations and interpretations have had to be made, it should not be altered. In doing this, I think it would cause a vicious cycle of adding and taking away from the constitution, causing its influence to be compromised.

jdotson said...

1. I think freedom of speech is most important. If i wasn't allowed to speak my opinion or was told to think a certain way i think i would explode.
2. Right to petition and freedom of press. I chose these two because the other three are more important to me. I wouldn't want to loose either of these rights but if i had to choose, i would pick those two.
3. I think freedom of same sex marriages should be added. I know that it doesn't effect me personally but i just can't stand the thought of keeping two people that love each other apart. its unfair to say that certain people can be married and that others can't. I don't understand how some people can object to it when it doesn't hurt anyone and it usually doesn't effect the people who oppose it.

Freedom of Religion is the most important of all because i believe that if we didn't have freedom of religion we would not be as different as we are today. Our differences is what makes our countries and our people. If we were all that same then we would just be really boring because we'd all be doing the same thing all the time. The Second most important is Freedom Of Speech. Our Freedom to speak our minds is what helps America decide who we are and how we think. The government should not have all control over us, we all have our own beliefs and opinions that we'd like to share, if we had no freedom of speech we would all rebel against it.

jack said...

I think the freedom of speech because with out that freedom we couldnt say what we think or what you believe, you wouldnt have the right to have an opinion.

Jared H. said...

I believe that freedom of speech is the most important right in the first amendment, because it allows us to voice our opinions. Without freedom of speech the government could call anyone who spoke out against it a traitor and imprison them (almost sounds like the Patriot Act...), and would then crush any possibility of change.

I would be willing to give up my freedom of religion, because I'm a reverend. Reverends are Protestant, and this country was made by Protestants. I'm safe.

I feel that the freedom to make pirate radio stations that broadcast throughout the city should be added. Down with the FCC!

Tashena Smith said...

The most important Amendment is freedom of petition. The reason why i think this is because there is always going to be something someone does not like, so they will have the right to protest against what they do not like. I'm willing to give up the right to peaceably assemble because sometimes people can take this out of control. Some people get to the point where they push and shove others and end up hurting someone. I think the right to be able to marry the same sex should be added to the Amendment.

Nathan Lindgren said...

I believe that the freedom of speech is the most important one out of the five, it is most important because it gives me the right to say what I believe is right! You cant keep someone from not saying what they feel is right or wrong. Without it we could not give our thoughts and opinions to people and adding something to it. It is a good the way because it is totally true how people should have the right to say what they want!

bherreraontiveros said...

I think that the most important one is freedom of religion because we are a country with a lot of different people from different places and they all have different believes. Most of the people argue because they don't let them worship or follow the things their religion is based on. I would give up the right to petition because if something isn't right the people will change it because people like doing the things they like so i don't need to ask people for signatures. I would just add that they treat everyone equal in every aspect.

i agree that the first amendments the most important out of all 27 amendments.the most important to us would be the freedom of speech. everything we say and pretty much do is protected on accounts of our freedom of speech. I would not be willing to give any of them up, all of them collectively are broad enough to protect us. this amendment lists the most of our freedoms and keep us living in peace. one i would add to our amendment is freedom to marry who we choose, whether it be same or different sex.

cbeach said...

I think that freedom of speech is the most important freedom people can have. If you can't express your opinion, then you can't truly have an opinion. Without your opinion and the right to say that opinion, we can't change anything. We would have to except things the way they were, and lose sight of what we believe in.
I don't think I could ever give up one of my rights. I want to express my opinion through my words and actions, I want to be able to protest something I don't believe in, I want to be able to read the books I want and write about my thoughts. I want to be able to tell the government what they're doing wrong, and I want to be able to decide what religion I practice, if any.
One freedom I would like to add would be the right to equal opportunities. No one should be turned down for a job or a school because of where they come from or how they look. Everyone from every religion, race or background should be treated justly and equaly.

1) The most important right of the first amendment is Freedom of speech. Without freedom of speech we wouldn't even have debates and basically the government would be controlling everything we do in life.

2) I would not be willing to give up any of those rights because one little thing can mess up the country. Many people don't realize how much the amendments help us out even though it may seem that we barely use it. For example right to peacably assemble seems to people that it isn't used but many election speeches are in that category.

3) I believe that the 5 freedoms of the first amendment goes over everything. Many freedoms you can think of will all go down into these 5 categories. Its amazing to think of how almost 300 years ago the authors of the Constitution had these great ideas and they are now working great in todays time.

Overall the first 5 amendments will be the most important for all of the constitution.

jburch said...

i believe the best right or freedom we have is free speech because if you have speech you have you're right to tell you're opinion to anyone. this means you should be able to assemble a protest.however the first amendment should not be changed. if you open the option for change you also open the door for translation.every way you think to express yourself is covered in the first amendment. Im not willing to give any right.

cuhl1 said...

I think the most important is freedom of speech because it's what we use in our everyday lives. I think freedom of speech includes freedom of petition because it includes the voice in our country. If we weren't allowed to have freedom of speech, then we wouldn't be allowed to do multiple things and also express ourselves. I wouldn't mind if freedom of press was taken out because that's the one I don't care for because of some media. Freedom of having the right to get married of whoever we choose, like the same sex marriage or something. Some states already accept same sex marriage, but might as well have the whole country have it. I don't really know what else I would add.

kcallan said...

People have many different opinions on the importance of the first five amendments, and how they rank. I am no different, however my answer probably differs considerably from most of my peers. Freedom of Religion is the most important to me, because my God and my religion are a very big part of my life. People will do what they want and worship who they want anyway. For example, back in communist Romania, my good friend's father, his family, and the members of his church were persecuted because of their choice of religion. The were forced to meet in secret, sneak in parts of the bible, and often hide from soldiers. Many people that he knew were killed and or arrested. He would have met the same fate if he hadn't walked through the mountains escaped to Austria, and from there migrated to America. People should not be harmed or thought differently of because of something that they believe in. However, even if we did not have freedom of religion, i would not renounce my religion or my God. I would stand up for what i believe in, and pay whatever consequences were deemed necessary.
Although all five of the first five amendments are important, not all of them hold an equal precidense in my heart or mind. The one that i would be willing to give up as a right, would be the right to peaceably assemble. If you wanted to protest the way things are being done, you don't necessarily have to gather in a group to do so. Freedom of petition and freedom of press both cover expressing the problem you have, as well as freedom of speech.
If I would have any amendment added to the constitution, it would be the freedom of marriage. I am sick of seeing those I care about hurt because they cannot be joined like everyone else. If they aren't hurting anyone, who are we to stop them from being married?
